Make composting second nature.
About us
Our mission is to drive organic waste separation by providing certified compostable film products and education to every individual and company that consumes, sells, or processes food. For over 20 years, EcoSafe Zero Waste has been manufacturing certified compostable film products and designing programs with the express purpose of keeping organic waste out of landfills. EcoSafe provides thoughtful training to simplify the implementation and execution of our programs that serve residential, institutional, and commercial markets. We have helped transform the LA Memorial Coliseum, 2010 Olympics, cities and municipalities as big as the City of San Francisco, various school districts across North America, universities and colleges such as Stanford & UBC, thousands of restaurants, janitorial services, and community composters into champions of collecting clean, contaminant aware compost collection experts. We are a Canadian company proudly operating across Canada and the United States to help get North America composting! All of our compostable products are BPI (Biodegradable Products Institute) certified to meet the ASTM D6400 standards specification. We’ve taken it a step further to ensure composters trust our products through the Compost Manufacturing Alliance certification to support composters and the important work that they do. We do the work that we do because it keeps food out of landfill, drastically reducing methane emissions which are 20-80x more potent than greenhouse gas. We support the soil regeneration movement through the power of compost. If you'd like to make composting second nature, work with us!

Improving the Circularity of Compostables and Compost brought together different sectors of the #compost industry. Together, we are working toward making compost circular within municipalities. Here's a reflection from our teammate Zoe Clark who attended alongside Gary Bilbro! See below!
Last week, I had the opportunity to participate in the Improving the Circularity of Compostables and Compost Future Search Event, in Denver CO. It was incredible to witness everyone from different sectors of the industry come together, find common ground and create action plans for the future of sustainability. I’ve spent the weekend reflecting on the work we did, and want to highlight some of my personal key takeaways: 🌿Connections: “There is more that unites us than divides us” Everyone has a deep and meaningful connection to our soils. I had the privilege of witnessing these connections during one of our activities. Whether it be through attending summer camp, helping your relative in the garden, or simply just playing outside as a kid, our roots (no pun intended) all tie back to the land and the soil. Let’s use our shared experiences to unite and drive our path towards a sustainable future forward. 🐛Responsibility: “We are responsible for our waste” There has been a fracture in our collective mindset, and as humans, we have forgotten that we are responsible for our waste. More often than not, we view our waste as someone else’s problem to take care of. Once it goes in the bin, we no longer view it as our own. As a collective, we need to alter this perception and place a higher responsibility on ourselves as individuals when it comes to what we put into the waste stream. 🌈Education: “Education is key” With proper education, from young to old, we can clean up our waste streams. Making education more accessible through resource toolkits, legislative mandates in public schools and education funding is at the foundation of how we solve most of our challenges. Especially when it comes to contamination. 🪴Opportunities: “We are all capable of change” With many challenges comes many opportunities for growth. Through proper legislation, education, funding, standardization, accessibility, harmony and collaboration, we can reduce contamination, improve compost infrastructure and heal our soils. I’ll be honest, at times the task of creating a more sustainable future can feel daunting or overwhelming, even for an optimist such as myself. But the Improving the Circularity of Compostables and Compost Future Search event left me feeling hopeful, inspired and in awe of how powerful we are when we join forces. Thank you to Susan Thoman and Janet Thoman for making this event possible. Thank you to Candy Castellanos, GPCC, MSOD, Arielle T. Sullivan, MSOD and the logistics team for developing an intentional agenda that allowed us to create plans of action. And of course, thank you to Gary Bilbro and the EcoSafe Zero Waste team for providing me with opportunities to participate in events like this!

A little video snippet from the 34th #WMABC Annual Golf Tournament last week! EcoSafe sponsored the event to fundraise money for Canuck Place Children's Hospice. Cara Anderson, as always, has to check the bin to ensure the source separation of organics is a success! How else would we collect food scraps for compost? Look for the green stripe! #organicsonly #makecompostingsecondnature #compostablebags #BritishColumbia

The Biodegradable Products Institute (BPI) held a successful summit last week in Berkeley, CA! The compost and compostables industry came together collaboratively to discuss really tough challenges. Being at the intersection of microplastics, compost use, PFAs, carbon sequestration, and landfill diversion, means there is a lot to do. Little snapshot of the week: Sammy Davies took a tour at Napa Recycling & Waste Services lead by Tim Dewey-Mattia. Composters have a lot on their plate, especially in California due to #SB1383. Contamination has a significant impact on the bottom line; on average, 21% of composter operating costs are spent on contamination removal (Source: Closed Loop Partners). The widespread issue of plastic contamination underscores the need for greater mitigation efforts across the entire composting value chain, from upstream to downstream. It also emphasizes the importance of more consistent and standardized design and labeling for compostable packaging, ensuring certified compostable materials are properly sorted and recovered at the end of their lifecycle. With the leadership of various composters, compostable companies, and North America's leading certifiers Biodegradable Products Institute (BPI) and Compost Manufacturing Alliance LLC, we are working to ensure the right policy is put in place to make composting second nature! #compost #compostables #bpi #closedloop #circularinnovation #sustainablepackaging #composters #soilhealth

SB23-253: We love policy like this as it's good for easing consumer confusion, AND we ensure we are compliant with certified compostable standards! Bravo State of Colorado for ensuring compostables aren't greenwashing their way into the world of food packaging and compost collections. Effective July 1, 2024: ⚫ Producers cannot label products as compostable unless certified by an independent third-party verification body. ⚫Certified compostable products must comply with specific labeling standards to ensure they are easily and immediately distinguishable as such.
