🌍 It was fantastic to be back in NYC during #UNGA week. A big thank you to Delphine Le Serre, PhD for organizing such a timely event, sparking essential conversations on the future of education. #HUMANES
Here are some of my key takeaways:
🔍 Impact of AI on Education: A #Paradigm #Shift is Needed
We’re facing a fundamental crisis in (higher) education, where over $2 trillion is spent globally each year to certify students on skills that AI can already perform. As Ben Nelson from Minerva University noted, this crisis is rooted in two key fallacies:
1. Exposure ≠ Knowledge: 95% of what students learn is forgotten within six months. True learning requires deep engagement and application.
2. Knowledge ≠ Learning: Active learning is 7-14x more effective than passive learning, yet it’s still not the norm.
Valerie Pisano from Mila - Quebec Artificial Intelligence Institute raised a crucial point: by 2050, we’ll coexist with superintelligence. How will this reshape our societal structures, values, and contributions?
The economic value of education is diminishing, and the #social #contract is breaking down. We need to rethink the paradigms and invest in what makes humans #human : ethics, wisdom, beauty and collective intelligence. Ollivier Dyens
François Taddei mentioned a common fear of AI overpowering humanity. Instead, can we reinvent constructive debates and focus on teaching future generations to care for themselves, others, and the planet?
🏫 The Role of AI in Education:
At the same time, AI holds the promise to transform education through #hyper-#personalization and #accessibility, meeting learners where they are.
Despite its potential, technology implementation in education lags behind other sectors like healthcare because educational research is significantly underfunded compared to fields like medicine.
While we must be patient in integrating AI into education, we cannot ignore the #urgency of the #existential #crisis in our current education systems.
🌟 The Road Ahead:
A paradigm shift towards "#planetizenship" is needed—one that prioritizes cooperation over competition and creates new public goods for a thriving society. Technology is only a mirror of our humanity. Hence, its crucial to align AI advancements with human values and collective well-being.
A #new generation is emerging—one that transcends Gen Z and Millennials. This is a #generation of #transition, striving for a #collective #purpose ("wekigai") and flourishing.
We are on the crossroads and have an opportunity to reshape education and empower every individual to thrive in an AI-driven world. At BE Beyond Education we help education institutions with this transition by focusing on and #measuring #what #matters.
