In general, transition refers to the variety of changes a person may pursue in order to express their gender. While many voices in popular culture may use the expression “sex change” to describe these processes, the term transition is much more appropriate, preferred and used by members of trans communities. Dear Government of Alberta, The proposed policies in the areas of health, education, and sport targetting gender diverse people will cause devasting harm. A new report published from Nature Human Behaviour confirms up to a 71% increase in suicide attempts among trans and nonbinary young people in US states that passed anti-trans legislation, including restrictions on gender affirming health care and school policies. Research proves, that anti-trans policies such as those proposed in Alberta will cause devasting harm to gender diverse people. Stop playing politics with vulnerable people. If Alberta goes ahead with these harmful policies, we will bring legal action.

Today is the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation - an opportunity for all people living in Canada to pause and reflect on the history of residential “schools”, where over 150,000 First Nations, Métis and Inuit children were forcefully removed from their families and culture and subjected to unspeakable violence. - Image: The Survivors’ Flag (National Centre for Truth and Reconciliation) is an expression of remembrance, meant to honour residential school Survivors and all the lives and communities impacted by the residential school system in Canada. Each element depicted on the flag was carefully selected by Survivors from across Canada, who were consulted in the flag’s creation.

Egale Canada is calling on political leaders to abandon anti-trans policies and legislation in light of devastating new evidence. A new peer-reviewed report, published in Nature, confirms what 2SLGBTQI advocates and allies have been warning: anti-trans legislation in states in the US, such as restrictions on gender-affirming health care and discriminatory school policies, caused up to a 72% increase in suicide attempts among transgender and nonbinary young people aged 13–24.  Read our full statement at: https://lnkd.in/g4Ti9sf6

Last week, Women, Peace and Security Network - Canada held an insightful and invaluable discussion addressing online, gender-based violence and strategies to prevent gendered disinformation, including amplifying the voices of women and other marginalized groups - from grassroots to the highest levels of government and calling on online platforms to take action and increase their accountability.   Egale Canada’s Executive Director, Helen Kennedy, brought her expertise and an emphasis on gender identity and its intersections, disproportionately affecting women and gender diverse people.

Last week, Network members Katrina Leclerc, Beth Woroniuk, Diana Sarosi (Oxfam Canada), and Helen Kennedy (Egale Canada ) joined Women Foreign Ministers in Toronto. As civil society briefers, they shared key insights & recommendations on tackling disinformation and #TFGBV, shrinking space for women’s movements, ongoing global crises in #Afghanistan, #Haiti, #Palestine and #Sudan, broadening concepts of gender and protecting #2SLGBTQIA+ communities, and more.
