🏗The City of Peterborough celebrated the opening of its new #masstimber Fire Station last week with a grand opening. We were happy to supply the cross-laminated timber (#CLT) and #Glulam for the building. 🌳This is the 3rd #masstimber Fire Station project that Element5 has completed! This certainly is a proof point against concerns about mass timber being a fire risk. ♻️The station is the City's first building that is designed, built and certified as a Net Zero energy and Net Zero Carbon building, fully designed with sustainability in mind. This energy efficient building uses ground source heat pumps, rooftop solar panels and has an abundance of natural light provided through bird-friendly high-performance windows and doors. The project was designed by Unity Design Studio Inc. and built by JCB Construction Canada, mass timber install by Les Constructions FGP. Thanks to Unity Design Studio for the photos.

As a $400M/year industry, #masstimber is still in its infancy in Canada, representing only 1% of construction. That number could hit US $1.3 billion by 2030. But to achieve this, the industry needs to rapidly increase production capacity. That's according to Timothy Buhler, of WoodWorks, who moderated the recent panel at the Toronto WoodWorks Summit: “Accelerating Mass Timber in Canada”. Fellow panelist Steven Street, Executive Director of WoodWorks stated that: Element5, which is in expansion mode, is proof that manufacturing can be successful. “We need five more of them.” We appreciate the shout-out Steven! The expansion of our facility in St. Thomas, Ontario is well underway and includes a new #Glulam plant that will increase the size of our facility from 130,000 square feet to over 350,000 square feet. Once completed, Element5 will have a mass timber production capacity of 100,000 cubic meters annually - more than double our current production output. Exciting times in the mass timber space! Yesterday Element5 President Patrick Poulin and HASSLACHER NORICA TIMBER VP of Sales RAFFAELE PARLATO spoke at Global Wood Summit in Vancouver, Canada about the #masstimber market in North American and Europe. 🛠️ Mass Timber currently only makes up 1% of the construction market, but interest in it really heating up, particularly in North America. According to some studies, the mass timber market in Canada alone could hit US $1.3 billion by 2030. 🏗 To meet this challenge the industry must rapidly expand production capacity - something that Element5 is in the midst of doing with our facility expansion. We were happy to be the #masstimber supplier for this project! Mass timber was used for the roof structure of the entrance and walkway from the atrium to the Life Sciences building - which consisted of post and beam #Glulam in combination with a #CLT deck. Element5 oversaw the construction design of the mass timber structural component, the development of the approval drawing and the coordination of the new structure within the existing structure, as well as supplied the mass timber material.
