A national not-for-profit dedicated to making cities flourish. HQ: Evergreen Brick Works
About us
Evergreen is a national non-profit working to transform public spaces in our cities for the health of people and our planet. Cities and communities that are better connected, inclusive to all and sustainable at their core. Cities that are bursting with life. Since 1991, Evergreen has been working to steward our planet, educate the next generation and create green, public spaces that benefit our cities and communities. Working with other city builders and community leaders to develop innovative ideas and catalyze change by testing solutions and help scale projects that benefit both people and our planet. Through our award-winning suite of programs, we have actively engaged Canadians in creating and sustaining healthy urban environments in our schools, our public spaces, in housing and transit systems, and communities themselves. Greener, vibrant cities start here – at a site, in a neighbourhood, on the ground – where spaces become great places, and have a real and lasting impact, creating a better world for all. Previously a historic brick factory, Evergreen Brick Works was transformed by Evergreen in 2010 to be an example and showcase of how that comes to life and is made possible.A demonstration hub where the world can experience sustainable practices that enable vibrant cities of the future. It connects people, business, academia and government to turn what-if’s into how-to’s that will shape our country for the better.

Why are we so keen on active mobility? Human-powered transportation like cycling is good for people and good for the planet. It encourages physical activity and provides healthy city solutions to traffic and pollution. But active mobility depends on having the right infrastructure in place. Transportation infrastructure that supports people-centred urban planning, like bike lanes, pedestrian pathways and connected networks, makes it safer and easier for everyone to choose active options. When we prioritize active, green and social infrastructure, we’re choosing healthier, more vibrant and efficient cities. See how studies from around the world show how transportation infrastructure eases congestion, reduces emissions and are a boon to businesses: https://lnkd.in/g-K8_rZs

Is your world more browsers than boardwalks? More memes than markets? More pixels than parks? We get it — you're reading this on LinkedIn (the irony isn’t lost on us!) But physical public spaces are game changers. They bring people together, improve our wellbeing and support the environment. We’re not saying you have to ditch Reddit, Twitch and Discord, but there’s no denying it: real-life spaces beat virtual ones, every time. Discover why we love face time over FaceTime, real rabbit holes over YouTube rabbit holes and feeling refreshed over refreshing your feed: https://lnkd.in/g-DqJeBP -- Votre monde compte-t-il plus de fenêtres web que de flâneries?

A fantastic panel at the recent Evergreen Canada Conference, "Centering Community: The importance of investing in climate ready social infrastructure to achieving sustainable urban development," moderated by CUI's very own President & CEO, Mary W. Rowe. Talk about #infrastructurematters! #EvergreenConference2024
It was a pleasure to sit down with Mary W. Rowe, Fee Stehle, Jen Angel, and Mayor Mike Savage to close #EvergreenConference2024 with a thought-provoking discussion on the challenges facing rapidly growing cities. We focused on how to align sectors and governments to address barriers, enhance public spaces, and help cities thrive in the face of rapid population growth. Thank you to Jen and Evergreen Canada for hosting such an important conversation, and congratulations on a great conference.

I had a really wonderful time at the Evergreen Conference. From the moment I arrived I was impressed with all of the efforts to make the space welcoming, warm, and inclusive -- with its focus on placemaking, I should have known! From offering tobacco to Indigenous guests, live ASL interpretation and French language translation, to providing reusable dishware for all of the planet-forward food and drinks, it was clear that every detail was planned with thoughtfulness and intention. Placing rugs, furniture, blankets, pillows, pumpkins, and chrysanthemums throughout the site brought coziness and intimacy to a professional setting. I found the speakers very powerful, participated in my first formal forest bathing practice, and enjoyed a fireside chat about belonging in public space -- literally gathered around a fire pit with a dozen other engaged participants. As I gushed in a voice note to my friend while walking the trail towards the subway, they remarked, "It sounds like a retreat." Indeed, what a refreshing change to leave a conference not just inspired and motivated but *nourished* (in every sense of the word!). Hats off to the Evergreen Canada team. Your opening remarks said, "Let us fill your cup" and you encouraged us to "make ourselves at home." In my experience, you certainly succeeded!

We can’t thank you enough for being part of the 2024 Evergreen Conference this week! Over the last couple of days, we’ve shared ideas, learned from experts and connected with incredible people committed to making public spaces more inclusive, joyful and climate ready. As we heard throughout the conference, this work takes patience, humility and grit. We need to put our trust (and resources) in communities, connect with each other and absorb the wisdom of the natural world. Partnering with public, private and philanthropic actors can help make these dreams a reality. Thank you for sharing yours with us. Our cups are full, we hope yours are too. 💚 #EvergreenConference2024 #PublicSpace #EvergreenBrickWorks
