Another EV Charging hardware provider is shuttering it's operations. One of the toughest choices to make as a #evcharginginfrastructure provider is who you chose to be your EV Charging hardware partner. Just 11 days after Enel Group announced the closure of its North American EV charging subsidiary, a Dutch newspaper reported that ENGIE will shut down its EVBox subsidiary. While few details are available, this already looks like a case study on how to exit gracefully (ENGIE) vs. how to hurt customers and tarnish your brand (Enel). Here’s what’s been reported so far regarding the potential EVBox shutdown: • EVBox will retain around 100 employees temporarily to keep chargers running. • The company plans to fulfill its maintenance and warranty obligations for stations already sold and installed. • At least one EVBox factory will be sold, retaining an additional 30 jobs. Still, this is sad news for the EV charging industry. EVBox has 605 employees on LinkedIn, so this implies at least 500 layoffs. EVBox isn't just another manufacturer. It offers an elegant portfolio of Level 2 and DC fast chargers. In particular, I've always appreciated EVBox's design, which stands out among a field of unaesthetic plastic and metal boxes. Both Enel X Way and EVBox shared a common strategy: betting heavily on the US market. I still believe this is the right move—the market for EV charging in the United States is far bigger than any single European country. It's the largest market in the world other than China (where many chargers are state-owned). Where European EV charging companies falter is in execution. I've spoken to 𝘮𝘢𝘯𝘺 US divisions that struggle to have their needs prioritized by the European parent company. Winning in North America is possible for global players, but simply copy-pasting what worked in Europe won’t cut it here. Please note that EVBox has not confirmed this news. Hopefully, the rumors are overstated.

The latest report from the International Council on Clean Transportation (ICCT) and Dunsky Energy + Climate Advisors reveals a critical upcoming need for enhanced public EV charging infrastructure in Canada, including a particular focus on Multi-Unit Residential Buildings (MURBs). As the number of zero-emission light-duty vehicles is projected to surge from 480,000 today to 5 million by 2030 — and a staggering 21 million by 2040 — Canada will face the challenge of retrofitting approximately 1.6 million MURB parking spaces by 2030 to support EV charging.
