A paper from Apple's research team recently argued that LLMs cannot reason. Did this research inform their decision to pull out of the recent OpenAI funding round at the 11th hour? We predict that 5 years from now we will find the conclusions from this paper somewhat humorous. Whether LLMs can or cannot "truly" reason today is a moot point. What they can provably do is increase productivity for most white collar employees by 25-30% when used in concert with regression, classification, time series prediction and multimodal deep learning systems. Treating LLMs as a new compute sub-system that plugs into current heuristic systems for specific types of semantic processing is the gateway to unlocking a doubling in global GDP. With 0 new inventions. It is extremely unlikely that we will make zero progress with reasoning systems in the time it takes to integrate the technology we have available today. We can go one step further and state that systems like o1 and gemini are already superhuman at semantic processing across long context lengths today.
