What do you know about our Fernie Youth Transition House? 🏡 Our 𝗧𝗿𝗮𝗻𝘀𝗶𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗛𝗼𝘂𝘀𝗲 is a semi-independent home preparing young men for adulthood. By providing stable, safe, and reliable housing, we offer these youth a foundation on which to build their futures. Our Transition Housing program offers personalized social support while also encouraging increased independence. This helps young, justice-involved men to develop vital skills and work towards a purposeful adulthood. Our young participants attend school, work, employment preparation programs, and other life-skills training without the stress of an unstable home. At the end of their stay, these young men are ready to return and positively contribute to their communities. Did you hear that our 𝐁𝐞𝐚𝐭 𝐁𝐮𝐢𝐥𝐝𝐞𝐫𝐬 𝐌𝐮𝐬𝐢𝐜 𝐓𝐡𝐞𝐫𝐚𝐩𝐲 𝐏𝐫𝐨𝐠𝐫𝐚𝐦 students from Cohort 5 had their graduation this month? 🎧️ What an incredible milestone for all participants! It’s been amazing seeing each and every one of them flourish and dive into the world of music. 🎶 We were lucky enough to have a guest speech from community leader Nebiyou Timotewos, Telus scholarship winner at this year's graduation. TELUS Friendly Future Foundation is our major funder, helping to make this life-changing program possible for dozens of youth each year. We'd like to extend our gratitude for all the support from Telus and to Nebiyou and our deepest congratulations to the latest graduating class of the Beat Builders program. Did you know that Canada's youth justice system is separate from the adult system? ⚖️ Under the 𝐘𝐨𝐮𝐭𝐡 𝐂𝐫𝐢𝐦𝐢𝐧𝐚𝐥 𝐉𝐮𝐬𝐭𝐢𝐜𝐞 𝐀𝐜𝐭 (𝐘𝐂𝐉𝐀), youth aged 12 to 17 are treated differently in criminal cases than adults, with different procedures recognizing their unique needs and an emphasis on rehabilitation. There are three key principles of the act: - Holding youth accountable - Promoting rehabilitation and reintegration - Preventing crime by addressing the root cause of criminal behaviour Under the YCJA, youth justice interventions reinforce respect for societal values, encourage the repair of harm done, respect ethnic, cultural, linguistic, and gender differences, and respond to the unique needs of Indigenous youth and other young people with special requirements. The YCJA encourages referrals to community-based organizations like Fernie Youth, where youth have the opportunity to transform their lives and grow into purposeful adults who can positively impact their communities. Recently, the Fernie Works team had the chance to visit the beautiful Rouge Urban National Park on a guided tour with our friends from EcoSpark. EcoSpark has been in operation for 27 years and empowers communities to take a more active role in protecting and sustaining their local environments by connecting students and the community to the natural world. This was an amazing day of exploring the park's forests, creeks, trails, and beaches, reconnecting with nature and learning about local ecology on the way.🌲 It was a fantastic day off for our hardworking Fernie Works team! 🙌 Thank you to EcoSpark for providing such an incredible experience for the Fernie Works team! Your dedication to fostering environmental awareness and sustainable practices is truly inspiring. We are grateful for the opportunity to engage with your programs and learn from your expertise. Have you heard about our 𝐓𝐨𝐫𝐨𝐧𝐭𝐨 𝐘𝐨𝐮𝐭𝐡 𝐄𝐪𝐮𝐢𝐭𝐲 𝐒𝐭𝐫𝐚𝐭𝐞𝐠𝐲? The Toronto Youth Equity Strategy (TYES) is a community reintegration project working to prevent at-risk young adults from future involvement with the justice system. 👫 Participants are matched with a case manager to help them develop skills to address the effects of trauma and violence, enabling them to make strides toward their goals, from education and employment, to housing and transportation, to financial literacy and life skills. We’ve seen the impact that this program has had on the youth in our community and we’re filled with pride watching them thrive with access to the support they need! Learn more about TYES and how it helps at fernieyouth.ca/tyes 🏀 #fernieyouth #caringbeyondreason #scarborough #nonprofitorganization #youthadvocacy #reintegration

Today is World Mental Health Day! 💚🧠 We work with justice-involved youth daily, and we understand the massive role that mental health can play in the lives of those in conflict with the law. While research on the link between mental illness and youth justice involvement is ongoing, it's clear that there's a connection. Programs like our Beat Builders Music Therapy offer a place for youth to break the stigma around mental health, particularly for men and people in racialized communities. By expanding our knowledge, expertise, and compassion about mental health, we can better support youth in need and ensure they get the help they deserve as they work to better themselves. This Mental Health Day, we hope you'll take some time to learn more about the challenges so many Canadian youth face.
