Today, on the National Day of Action and Awareness for Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women, Girls, and 2SLGBTQIA+ People, we honour the lives of Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women, Girls, 2 Spirit, and Gender Diverse People. ❤️ It's a day to reflect, listen, and take action. Every one of us has a role in addressing the systemic violence faced by Indigenous communities. In Saskatoon, Iskwewuk E-wichiwitochik will be holding a Sisters in Spirit 2024 vigil at the Saskatoon Civic Square. Please see the image for details. Congratulations, Chief Darcy Bear! 👏👏🙌
Today, Chief Darcy Bear has received the Order of Canada award from the Governor General, Her Excellency the Right Honourable Mary Simon. Originally announced in October 2020, the formal investiture was delayed due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The Order of Canada is awarded to individuals across Canada to celebrate outstanding and extraordinary contributions to the nation, recognizing those who enrich the lives of others and made a difference to the country. This coming Sunday, October 6th, marks Chief Bear’s 30th Anniversary as Chief of Whitecap Dakota Nation.

Today, on September 30th, we at FNCIAS pause to reflect, remember, and honour the survivors of residential schools, and those who tragically never returned home. The National Day for Truth and Reconciliation is a solemn reminder of the resilience of our people and the importance of acknowledging the truth as we continue the path toward healing. We wear orange to recognize the deep impacts residential schools have had on our communities and to stand in solidarity with all Indigenous peoples across Canada. Let us all honour the truths shared by survivors, work together to keep their stories alive, and strive for a future that is rooted in understanding, respect, and equity. #OrangeShirtDay #EveryChildMatters #NationalDayForTruthAndReconciliation #FNCIAS #IndigenousRights #TruthAndReconciliation

Next Friday, the Saskatoon Tribal Council is holding its Every Child Matters Community Walk, being held ahead of National Day for Truth and Reconciliation on September 30. You’re invited to join! The walk will begin at 10 a.m. at the STC’s office on Packham Avenue, September 27, 2024. The community walk is meant to honour and commemorate those who attended residential schools. Last year, SIGA participated in the walk, which began at the STC office in Sutherland Industrial. #miskasowin #tapwewin #miyowicehtowin

Congratulations to our member Nation, Ahtahkakoop Cree Nation, AC Developments Corp., and all involved! 🎉
While the weather was wet, nothing could dampen the mood of all involved at the sod turning at the site for the urgent care centre coming to Saskatoon. It was great to hear Chief Larry Ahenakew from the Ahtahkakoop Cree Nation speak of the many community benefits this project will have for the residents of Saskatchewan. Chief Ahenakew and his nation’s team were instrumental in moving this project from the very early idea stage to this point today. Chief Darcy Bear, speaking as Board Chair for SIIT, mentioned the training opportunities that will exist for First Nation individuals, both within the health care side upon completion and during the construction period. I especially liked how he noted that construction will be completed in 2026 as we celebrate 150 years of the Treaty Six signing, which of course has the medicine chest clause. It was an honour to work with Ahtahkakoop, the AC Developments Corp. and all the team members who helped along the way in financing this worthy project. Congratulations to Ahtahkakoop and all Involved on today’s great event and I look forward to continuing our work moving forward.
