    🖌️ When measuring the carbon emissions of digital advertising, one crucial element is often overlooked: creative production. But why is it so important? Creative production includes everything from content creation, equipment, and transportation to agency work—all the emissions associated with bringing an ad into the world. If we only focus on ad distribution and consumption, we're missing a big piece of the puzzle. 💡 For instance, a typical awareness social media campaign might generate around 462 kg CO₂e per €10,000 invested—but that doesn’t even include creative production.  Depending on the campaign's total budget, creative production could increase emissions by up to 65%, significantly adding to the carbon footprint. And it’s not just about the ads themselves. The environmental impact extends to the entire lifecycle of digital advertising, from the production stage to the moment it reaches the user’s device. The takeaway? To achieve accurate carbon measurements and make informed decisions, we must consider the full lifecycle of digital ads, including creative production.     To genuinely address the carbon footprint of digital advertising, we need to embrace lifecycle thinking. 📊 🔄 It’s easy to focus solely on the emissions generated when an ad is displayed, but the reality is far more complex. From the very inception of an ad in the creative production phase, through its distribution, and finally its consumption, every step has an environmental impact. Consider this: a 15-second video ad might seem harmless, but it produces significantly more emissions than a 6-second ad. And it doesn’t stop there—factors like where the ad is displayed, its resolution, and the energy mix of the country all contribute to the total carbon footprint. 🌍🎥 Lifecycle thinking demands that we take responsibility for every phase of the process. This holistic approach allows us to identify and mitigate the environmental impact at each stage, from the resources used in creating content to the energy consumed by devices viewing the ad. As digital marketers, it’s our duty to look at the full picture and ensure that our strategies don’t just drive engagement but also promote sustainability. Let's break it down with three key numbers: 1️⃣ 1.5 billion tons CO₂e – This is the estimated carbon footprint of the entire digital industry. To put this into perspective, if the internet were a country, it would be the world's 5th largest polluter. 2️⃣ 40 million tons CO₂e per year – This is the estimated carbon footprint of digital advertising alone. That's equivalent to the emissions produced by a country like Sweden. 3️⃣ 120 million tons CO₂e – This is the estimated carbon emissions generated by internet traffic (not including video streaming platforms or videogames). As businesses continue to invest in digital advertising, this number is only expected to rise. Why does this matter? Because digital advertising is a part of our everyday activities, and it plays a crucial role in the global carbon footprint of digital.
