Alberta's First Credibly Asserted Métis Community
About us
Fort McKay Métis Nation is located 60 kilometres north of Fort McMurray. A founding member of the Alberta Métis Federation, The McKay Métis Nation is committed to self-governance, and on May 24, 2019, unveiled a constitution and other governance instruments including an Election Act, Governance Act, and Membership Act. In 2018, the Fort McKay Métis Nation saw a major milestone when they bought, fee simple, the land on which their community is built. This was historic and an example to many other Métis communities. In 2020, the Fort McKay Métis Nation was given “credible assertion” status from the province of Alberta – the first Métis community in Alberta to be given the same recognition as a First Nation.

Fort McKay Métis Nation applauds Federal Court decision. “Métis Nation of Alberta is not our government, does not represent us, and the court agrees.” FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE March 28, 2024 Fort McKay, AB – The Fort McKay Metis Nation (FMMN) is applauding today’s federal court decision. https://lnkd.in/etvBvvcR The federal government undertook an agreement with the (formerly) Métis Nation of Alberta (MNA) that granted the MNA the authority to exclusively represent all Métis people in Alberta for the purposes of exercising and recognizing section 35 Métis rights under the Constitution Act, 1982. Briefly, that would have meant that established, recognized and democratic Métis Nations, like FMMN, would have their governance authority stripped by this agreement and transferred to the MNA. FMMN challenged this gross overreach on the part of the MNA and the federal government. In a statement today on behalf of the FMMN, Contessa Short, Director of Governance said, “It’s hard to overestimate the importance and repercussions of this decision. The MNA has set itself up, improperly, as a level of government that represents us. They never have, and they will not. We govern ourselves, per our constitution of 2019 and our history of self-representation. We applaud the court for it’s wisdom and decision making on this issue. And we look forward to continuing our path forward as a Métis Nation, with a government elected by our members, and working diligently for them. And we trust the federal government will now work directly with us, and other Métis communities, in terms of Section 35 representation.” -30- Media requests please contact: Morten Paulsen 403.399.3377 morten@shaw.ca

Today, March 21, the International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination you can do several things to fight racism, discrimination, and xenophobia in Canada. 🧡💙 1. Educate yourself and others about the history and ongoing issues of racism, discrimination, and xenophobia in Canada to increase awareness and understanding of these issues. (Visit OrangePath.ca to learn about the Indigenous experience.) 2. Speak out against racism, discrimination, and xenophobia when you encounter it. This can be done by calling out racist or discriminatory behaviour and language and by standing in solidarity with those who are being targeted. 3. Support Indigenous peoples and racialized and religious minority communities by listening to and amplifying their voices and by supporting organizations and initiatives that work towards racial equality. 4. Encourage anti-racism and racial equality in all areas of life, including in the workplace, schools, and communities, and promote policies and initiatives that support these values.
