🌿🚀 Exciting News! The Invasive Phragmites Control Fund is supporting local action and expanding control activities in Ontario 🌱💪 Let's take a closer look at how the fund recipients are taking action! One initiative in northern Ontario is led by Grand Council Treaty #3, the traditional government of the Anishinaabe Nation in Treaty #3. After mapping and DNA testing Phragmites in 2022 and 2023, they confirmed the presence of invasive species and are now set to expand their efforts in 2024. 🌾 Their efforts will target new regions and 28 Treaty #3 First Nation communities. 👏 Huge thanks to all the community groups, Indigenous organizations, and municipalities joining the fight against invasive Phragmites! Your efforts are truly making a difference. Common Milkweed and Swamp Milkweed plants are in bloom. These are host plants for the Monarch butterfly. The butterflies lay their eggs on these plants and their larval stage (caterpillars) feed exclusively on the plant until the caterpillar gets big enough to form a chrysalis (pupa). Once in the chrysalis, the caterpillar undergoes an impressive transformation and an adult Monarch butterfly comes out approximately two weeks later. These plants are very important for Monarch butterflies. Have you seen any caterpillars? Have you seen any Monarch Butterflies? Please share you photos with us!

  • We are sharing a study request on behalf of the University of Toronto: Hello all! Our research group at the University of Toronto and Baycrest Hospital is looking for nature-interested folks to contribute to our research. Our research centers around the cognitive benefits of nature-related interests, with previous investigation into birding, but we're looking to expand to other interests such as gardening, hiking, and cycling. If you're interested in getting involved, take part in our current study on our website (www.birdingstudies.com) and provide us with feedback about your own interest (on the contact tab). Our current study focuses on birds, but no knowledge is required to participate - it will provide a sense of how we examine natural interests in ways that could be adapted to other areas. Tell us about how nature investigation has changed the way you see the world in our feedback survey, to help guide our future studies!

Volunteers from General Motors helped with girdling and pulling of seedlings of Common Buckthorn. Thank you for your help with this initiative. We will be evaluating the success of our summer management of Buckthorn in the fall and looking to see where we still need to do some work. Volunteers are always needed! FSM’s Buckthorn management project is made possible by the Invasive Species Action Fund (ISAF) from Invasive Species Centre with support of the Ontario Ministry of Natural Resources and Forestry.
