OPEN TO ALL - Members AND non-members! ✨ Young climate activists have more in common than we think – especially beyond borders. 🌎 To fight climate change, Canada needs to turn to Indigenous communities, specifically young Indigenous leaders in Canada. 🌱 The Canadian government has been increasingly turning to Indigenous communities’ expertise to help further reconciliation. In 2021, the federal government set aside $340 million to support areas protected by Indigenous groups and networks of Indigenous experts. 💰 Where is the progress on this, according to young Indigenous leaders driving solutions to tackle Canada’s climate crisis? What else needs to be done? 📈 Meanwhile, across the world, young people in Africa are bearing the brunt of climate change-related disasters. More than 200 million young people are disproportionately affected by climate-change impacts on their health, wellbeing and future.💧 Like Canada, Africa is a large place, home to diverse youth with unique regional needs and perspectives. Young people are increasingly becoming a resource to tackle climate change. 💪🏽 This October 23 webinar will highlight the voices of change from both continents, featuring youth-led initiatives and stories of resilience. 📣 We will delve into challenges and systemic issues brought by colonialism and how these young leaders are leveraging their communities’ expertise, advocating for policy changes, and building cross-cultural alliances to address climate injustices. 🤝 Don't miss out! 👉 Register now! 🔗 https://lnkd.in/gG7uDFQu Presented by Mastercard Foundation and Future of Good. #climatejustice #futureofgood #youthleadership #indigenousvoices #climateaction #indigenousyouth #climatechange #climatecrisis #youthactivism #globalyouth #sustainability #socialimpact #environment #community #resilience

Saying goodbye to a matriarch of Franco-social enterprises in Canada By Anouk Bertner | Future of Good I am so sad to share that Ethel Cote passed away on Wednesday. Ethel was a force. There is no other way to really describe her. She was a person who made things happen. Even when the odds were stacked against her, she persevered. She was a champion of women’s rights, solidarity movements, and social enterprise. Her list of awards and accomplishments is incredibly long. I think of Ethel as the matriarch of Franco-social enterprises in Canada. She was always kind, helping me dig through my own thinking and surface the necessary insights to do the work in front of me. She was generous with her time, her connections, and her wisdom. When I worked at EcoEquitable, she offered practical tips, tools, and connections. She even encouraged me to attend a French TV special on social enterprises. She knew everyone. She was also passionate about solidarity with the global south before this was fashionable. Ethel promoted community economic development and the social economy as ways for marginalized groups to claim financial independence. We will miss Ethel and are deeply grateful for her contributions. “We’re in a position where we are going to have to be making decisions of: Do we give out less food?” - Heather Kirby, executive director of Kawartha Lakes Food Source, said demand for the charity’s services is outpacing the organization’s revenue growth. If the charity is forced to do so, it won’t be alone, according to a new report from the Ontario Nonprofit Network. In 2024, 56% of non-profits reported scaling back programs or services—a 17% increase from the year prior. In addition to reducing program capacity, 33% of non-profits said they increased program or service waiting lists over the past year, and 12% reported discontinuing programs or services. What's causing the strain? The permanent closure of a venture capital program for Black businesswomen is already reverberating across North America, say those working to address systemic racial inequalities in business funding. “It’s taking money off the table,” said Craig Wellington, CEO of the Black Opportunity Fund. “We have Black-led venture funds here in Canada that are looking to raise seed capital from the U.S., and this environment is now making it harder for them to raise that seed capital.” In 2023, conservative activists sued the Atlanta-based Fearless Fund, claiming its Strivers Grant racially discriminated against non-Black business owners. 🏠The government of Manitoba announced Tuesday a $10 million grant to increase the supply of affordable housing using an unlikely vehicle: a real estate investment trust. “Today marks another significant step forward in our collective efforts to end chronic homelessness,” said Manitoba Premier Wab Kinew, in a press release. “We’re proud to partner with the big-hearted business community to put people on a path to home ownership.” 🏢 Real estate investment trusts (REITs) are companies that purchase and operate real estate. First established in Canada in the 1990s, REITs were created to enable middle-class investors to invest in commercial real estate. 🔗Read our latest article to learn more: https://lnkd.in/gjSCVjHW @Gabe Oatley is Future of Good’s editorial fellow on transforming funding models. #affordablehousing #realestate #futureofgood #housingcrisis #reit #manitoba #investment #homeownership #socialimpact #canadianpolitics #housingforall #economicgrowth #communitydevelopment #housing
