Leadership is a learnable skill … Too often, people think they're either born leaders or not. However, leadership is a skill that can be developed with practice and dedication. Here are a few key things that can help you learn to lead: Self-awareness: Understanding your strengths and weaknesses is crucial for leadership growth. Continuous learning: Stay curious and be open to new ideas and perspectives. Mentorship: Seek guidance from experienced leaders who can offer support and advice. Practical experience: Take on leadership roles, even small ones, to gain real-world experience. Embrace failure: Don't be afraid to make mistakes. Learn from them and move forward. Leadership isn't about titles or positions. It's about influencing, impacting, and inspiring others. No matter where you are in your career, you can develop the skills to become a great leader. #leadership #learntolead #leadershipdevelopment #mentorship #careergrowth #growthmindset #continuousimprovement

If you want to go fast, go alone. If you want to go far, go together.  - African Proverb The most successful sports teams and businesses can function, learn, and adapt in highly competitive and complex environments. Change is welcomed as an opportunity to learn, grow, and excel. How did they get that way? What are the key ingredients responsible for establishing this mindset and creating synergy? The most vital element is the people—specifically, their relationships with each other. In other words, the underlying catalyst of this highly productive team dynamic is trust. The more a group trusts one another, the faster they unite and identify as a team, which, in turn, can lead to increased collaboration and productivity. The greater the team's trust level, the more effective it is at solving problems. Trust is the essential element that drives activity and efficient decision-making. When people work in an organization with a culture of trust, they are 11 times more likely than rivals to innovate and 32 times more likely to take risks with the potential to benefit the company. On the contrary, the absence of trust within an organization yields an environment of uncertainty, disbelief, suspicion, and doubt. People who do not trust one another will not communicate, collaborate or work together effectively and, in some cases, will engage in individual and/or organizational sabotage. Moreover, groups lacking trust tend to focus on individual behaviours and outputs rather than common goals; therefore, a lack of trust in the workplace hinders problem-solving, decision-making, productivity, and profit. Trust is the number one determinant of team effectiveness.

Compared with people at low-trust companies, people at high-trust companies report 74% less stress, 106% more energy at work, 50% higher productivity, 13% fewer sick days, 76% more engagement, 29% more satisfaction with their lives, and 40% less burnout.

Mission Command & Dynamic Subordination Mission Command is a leadership style that values decentralized decision-making, initiative, & trust. It empowers subordinates to act according to the leader's intent to achieve mission objectives, even without explicit orders. This is crucial in complex, rapidly changing environments where rigid top-down command structures falter. Key elements: Leader's Intent: The operation's purpose & desired outcome are clearly articulated. Mutual Trust: Shared confidence between leaders & subordinates. Decentralized Execution: Authority delegated to the lowest practical level for agile decision-making. Disciplined Initiative: Subordinates acting independently within the leader's intent. Mission Orders: Directives focused on the "what" & "why," not the "how." Risk Acceptance: Calculated risk-taking to achieve the mission. Dynamic Subordination complements Mission Command. It proposes that superior-subordinate roles aren't fixed but can shift based on situation and expertise. Leadership and followership adjust dynamically to whoever is best suited to lead in a given context. How it works: Situational Leadership: The most knowledgeable person on an issue may temporarily lead, regardless of title or position. Fluid Roles: Team members switch between leading & following as needed. Empowerment: Individuals step up when their expertise is required. Benefits: Increased agility & adaptability Enhanced decision-making Improved morale & motivation Greater innovation Challenges: Requires high trust Demands clear communication Difficult in hierarchical organizations Mission Command and Dynamic Subordination enhance team effectiveness, especially in complex environments. They foster trust, initiative, and flexibility, enabling mission success.

Learning = continuous improvement = continuous growth. Learning is the key to continuous improvement and growth. It's about embracing a growth mindset and recognizing that we can constantly evolve and develop new skills, regardless of age or experience. That adage about old dogs and new tricks? SaaS Unicorn Founder | I Win Because I Lose So Much | Candid Takes on AI, Entrepreneurship & VC | Bestselling Author

The #1 reason entrepreneurs stop growing When I first started out, I was a sponge. I took in every bit of information I could, whether it was from: A free webinar A random blog post A YouTube video at 2 a.m. Conversations with other founders Even trial and error from failed projects I didn’t care where the knowledge came from. I just wanted to learn. ...Fast forward to recently. I decided to check out a beginner AI course on LinkedIn. I figured, why not? Even if it’s basic, there’s always something new to learn. But what blew me away wasn’t the course. It was the comments. People were ripping it apart: “Too simple.” “A waste of time.” “Useless for anyone with real knowledge.” And that’s when it hit me: This is why so many entrepreneurs stop growing. They think they’ve outgrown the basics. But even in that beginner course, I found a gem I didn’t know before. So, to the critics: St*u. If a course isn’t at your level, just move on. But don’t discourage others who are genuinely trying to learn. We all start somewhere. And as entrepreneurs, growth comes from staying open to learning. NO MATTER how far you’ve come. The moment you think you’re “too advanced” to pick up something new is the moment you stop growing. PS: What’s one small way you’ve kept learning this week? Reading a blog post Listening to a podcast Watching a quick tutorial Asking for advice from a mentor Let me know—I’d love to hear how you're staying curious!

Over the last few days, I’ve been listening to, reading, and reflecting on the importance of how we handle hard things. I came across this video from 2022 of Kara Lawson, the head coach of the Duke Blue Devils women’s basketball team. Her call to “Handle hard better” is a great message to instill in your team.   An episode of the Huberman Lab echoes this, in this particular episode, Andrew Huberman interviewed David Goggins.   While intense, his idea of just do it was compelling. And it’s not a Nike “just do it” but rather an attitude of if things suck, and they will, how you show up will make a difference and how you show up is entirely up to you.   Moreover, when things are hard is when we grow. I want to repeat that: hard is how we grow.   It’s all the same: life can be hard, times can suck, but we can still choose how we want to show up.  How do we want to handle hard?   Do we turn on each other or do we turn towards each other and try to make the team better?   Do we look inward and ask “what can I do to help right now?” Mark Gasparotto talked about this just last week on this platform … it’s such a powerful question and it shows a willingness to look inward first rather than spew blame. It's a great way to handle hard.   It’s not easy, but I hope we all try to do that everyday. I know I struggle and don’t always handle hard better, but I keep trying. Stuff I talked about:   Kara Lawson “Handle Hard Better” https://lnkd.in/e8TXXeau); Mark Gasparotto “How Can I Help” LinkedIn, 6 Oct 24, and Andrew Huberman “Build Inner Strength” https://lnkd.in/eUhbX-KD

I’m honored to have been featured by Royal Roads University for my work supporting Afghan and Ukrainian refugees in Aman Lara. But this post isn’t just about what I’ve done—it’s about what you can do too. To my fellow veterans: Your story doesn’t end the day you leave the Canadian Armed Forces. There’s a world of opportunity out there, and education is one of the many paths that can help you find fulfillment and purpose again. Whether you're still serving and feeling a bit lost in your upcoming transition, or a veteran wondering what’s next, don’t give up hope. You owe it to yourself to pursue what truly makes you feel fulfilled, whatever that may be. If you need guidance or ideas on how to build a plan, shoot me a message. I’m happy to chat and help you find your path forward. https://lnkd.in/gne67Udd

Mission success = 1. Understanding the problem you are trying to solve. 2. Embracing the meritocracy of ideas. 3. Collaborative planning across the team-of-teams. 4. Rehearsals so the muscle memory counter acts any degradation of your senses during chaos. 5. Execution guided by trust and in accordance with your roles and responsibilities. 6. In situ measurements and adjustments. 7. Continuous learning without ego getting in the way. Lakeland crushed the Task Force Challenge by following all the principles listed above. Gasparotto Group is grateful for our partnership with Canadian Tank Museum where we can conduct our Outside the Wire program using tanks and other mechanized assets.
