The Grand Council of the Crees (Eeyou Istchee) joins the many nations across the country today who mourn the passing of a great leader and mentor to many. Justice Murray Sinclair left us today completing his journey peacefully surrounded by loving friends and family. Murray Sinclair will always be remembered as the calm spirt who fought for fairer treatment of Indigenous People in the justice system and for being our guide through the difficult but important path of giving a voice to survivors and opening a nationwide dialogue on reconciliation. Thank you for the work you have done and may you rest in peace knowing that you have inspired many to continue in your footsteps.

The Gouvernement du Québec, the Cree Nation Government and the Government of Canada will continue working together on a new marine protection area project https://lnkd.in/ezfgaQ9e in a new tab) Recognizing the importance of protecting the ecological integrity, biodiversity and cultural value of the coastal waters of Québec’s Eeyou Istchee Baie-James region, the Gouvernement du Québec, the Cree Nation Government and the Government of Canada are announcing their intention to work together on a project to establish a marine protection area (MPA) to preserve this natural and cultural treasure. This project is complementary to the Wiinipaakw Indigenous Protected Area and national marine conservation area (IPA-NMCA) project in the offshore waters of Baie James, which is also announced today, and would protect an important part of the area’s unique northern ecosystems sustaining the Cree way of life. -------------------------------------------------------------------------- Le gouvernement du Québec, le Gouvernement de la nation crie et le gouvernement du Canada poursuivront leur collaboration concernant un nouveau projet d’aire marine protégée https://lnkd.in/ecptaXpt Reconnaissant l’importance de protéger l’intégrité écologique, la biodiversité et la valeur culturelle des eaux côtières de la région d’Eeyou Istchee Baie-James au Québec, le gouvernement du Québec, le Gouvernement de la nation crie et le gouvernement du Canada annoncent leur intention de collaborer à un projet pour mettre en place une aire marine protégée (AMP) afin de préserver ce joyau naturel. Ce projet, qui est complémentaire au projet Wiinipaakw d’aire protégée autochtone et d’aire marine nationale de conservation (APA-AMNC) dans le milieu extracôtier de la baie James également annoncé aujourd’hui, permettrait de protéger une partie importante des écosystèmes nordiques uniques de la région et contribuerait à soutenir le mode de vie des Cris.
