This was definitely worth a listen. What are the barriers impacting kids' access to sport and what can be done to overcome them?
Last night, Marco Di Buono (President, Canadian Tire Jumpstart Charities) joined The Agenda with Steve Paikin on TVO to discuss how affordability barriers are impacting kids' access to sport. Joined by Dan Cardoza (YMCA of Greater Toronto) and celebrated Olympian & academic Bruce Kidd, the panel discussed the importance of building an inclusive, accessible and safe environment for all kids and the opportunities available to make lasting and meaningful change across Canada. "This year’s (Jumpstart) month is more significant than ever, as last year, one in three families reported they couldn’t afford sports for their kids, and this year, that number has increased to one in two." "Over the 20 years of Jumpstart operations in Grande Prairie, nearly 7,500 kids have seen direct support from Jumpstart, with almost $1 million distributed in the Grande Prairie area alone."
“We don’t have a demand problem with sport; kids want to play, they’re telling us they want to play, what we have is a bit of a supply challenge.” Jumpstart president Marco Di Buono chatted with My Grand Prairie Now about the challenges of providing sport opportunities to kids, the findings from our recent State of Play Report, and what Jumpstart is doing to help close the gap.

A great article on seeing sport parents as resources the organizations can utilize rather than 'problems' they need to solve. I highly recommend reading the whole article. "Sports organizations could benefit from establishing mechanisms to gain deeper insights into the values, emotions, and thoughts influencing parental behaviours in specific sport settings. This involves bringing in a communication system that helps open dialogues without imposing lengthy tasks to be completed by parents or requiring extra training for parents. Below are 7 practical activities that can (a) help foster better relationships with parents, (b) provide parents with a better understanding of an organization’s objectives, and (c) ultimately minimize parents’ negative behaviours. 1. Create tools that allow parents to offer regular feedback. 2. Introduce and facilitate online forums. 3. Form parent-to-parent mentorship programs. 4. Establish parent-coach partnerships. 5. Develop video resources that model positive parenting behaviours. 6. Provide positive reinforcement and recognition. 7. Suggest evidence-based resources for parents. https://bit.ly/4ctiMcp
