About us
A charitable organization that advances food security in the Fredericton Area through inclusive programs and services. Greener Village Pillars: - Food Bank and Clothing Boutique - Learning Kitchen - Community Gardens - Life Skills Development Over 30 years, Greener Village has become a gathering place for those who share the idea that food can bridge whatever might divide us. Just as food brings us around a table, so too can it bring our community together behind our belief that the challenges of life will not ever exceed our capacity to care for one another. The problem is real and growing. In 2012, the Canadian Community Health Survey indicated that 15.6% of households in New Brunswick were food insecure, 2.6% higher than the national average. These figures reveal that there are 47,000 food insecure households in New Brunswick. Within severely insecure households: - a majority reported feeling hungry, losing weight, and cutting or skipping meals; - more than 1/3 reported adults in the household who hadn’t eaten for an entire day; - over 2/3 could not afford to provide balanced meals to the children in their household; - 1 in 6 children in these households were hungry. Founded in 1984 as a conventional not-for-profit food bank, Greener Village has since shed its original model and developed programming that addresses hunger and food security through capacity building and fellowship. We serve over 1000 families a month, or approximately 3000 people, 37% of which are children. Consistent access to safe and nutritious food is fundamental; help us make sure that no one in our community goes hungry: www.greenervillage.org

Are you ready for a long term solution? “It’s been impossible not to hear and see how increasing inflation is affecting those we know in our community. With young children at home myself, I feel for the painful challenges faced by those parents struggling to afford the rising cost of what their family needs. Supporting Greener Village was one step I could take to lend my support - Greener Village knows where the need is, and this project will use their resources to provide support more effectively, in a way that provides a long term solution, rather than trying to apply patches,” says Campaign Cabinet Member Candace Sears. The Perishable Food Rescue Centre will be the first of its kind in Canada, helping reduce food waste and put fresh food on the tables of the 25% of New Brunswickers who are struggling. Campaign Cabinet Chair Blair Hyslop says, “I was inspired by the idea of the Perishable Food Rescue Center – what an incredible idea! When I found out the Center will serve all food banks in New Brunswick, I realized the wide-reaching impact it will have." Join the THRIVE campaign today: https://lnkd.in/gwJXNfe3

We were so honoured to win the Fredericton Chamber of Commerce Resilience Award presented by Spacek Armstrong & Norrad! It was a great event, hearing the inspiring stories of other nominees. Congratulations to the Chamber for a wonderful event, and to all the nominees who contribute so much to our community. Resilience doesn't happen in a silo, and we could never do what we do without the incredible support of those around us. Thank you! #FCOC #ResilienceAward #SpacekArmstrongNorrad #ThankYou

Not Everything is as it Seems... It’s easy to make assumptions about someone based on what they drive, but the reality is more complicated. The person you see pulling up to a food bank in a nice car might have been doing well just a few months ago before an unexpected crisis hit. Maybe it’s a car they bought before things changed, or a gift from a family member, or even just cheaper monthly payments than a used car. Hardship can happen to anyone, and food insecurity doesn’t have a “look.” Let’s break the stigma around needing support. We are beyond thrilled to be the recipient of the Fredericton Chamber of Commerce Business Excellence Award for Resilience, presented by Spacek Armstrong & Norrad. Our staff and volunteers work tirelessly in pursuit of our mission: provide food, clothing and opportunities people need on their journey to self-sufficiency. For over 40 years, we've adapted to meet the needs and rising demand for our services: today, 1 in 4 households in New Brunswick are food insecure. Our programs today include grocery boxes, Holiday Hampers, Angel Tree, the Backpack Program, tax preparation, clothing and more. In 2025, Greener Village is building Canada's first Perishable Food Rescue Centre, which will process and distribute over $4 million of b grade and bumper crops to 70 food related charities across New Brunswick. Come celebrate with us at the Business Excellence Awards one week from today at the Delta Hotels by Marriott Fredericton and be there for the reveal of the recipients of the other eight awards! “I have to choose between medicine and food.” For many seniors in New Brunswick, this is a reality. Multiple medications for heart conditions, diabetes or even cancer on a fixed income can make for difficult decisions each month. Demand for food at Greener Village has increased dramatically since 2020, and while shelf stable items are more accessible, farm fresh food is essential to healthy living - and even more important when dealing with health issues. We have a solution: Greener Village is expanding our capacity to ensure no family goes hungry by building a Perishable Food Rescue Centre - the first of its kind in Atlantic Canada. The PFRC will rescue, process and distribute $4 million worth of food, diverting it from landfills and delivering it to the plates of New Brunswickers in need. By rescuing bumper and b-grade crops for freezing, packaging and distribution to 70 food-focused charities in New Brunswick, we believe our solution will help reduce food insecurity provincially. We can’t do it without your help: if you haven’t already, join us today in making the Perishable Food Rescue Centre a reality by making a donation to the THRIVE campaign. Thank you for helping New Brunswickers THRIVE: https://lnkd.in/gh_85rFu

We are incredibly grateful for the fantastic team from Siemens, who sent volunteers this week to help us in so many ways! These dedicated volunteers helped sort food donations in the warehouse, baked bread in our kitchen, and even built shelving for our Angel Tree gift program in "Toyland." Thank you Nimisha Mishra for coordinating this day! Their hard work and generosity have made a significant impact, and we couldn’t be more appreciative. Thank you, Siemens, for supporting Greener Village and the families we serve! #ThankfulThursday #SiemensVolunteers #CommunitySupport #AngelTree #MakingADifference
