Everyone wants to be an AI company. So much so, that if you’re not using (or talking about, or planning for) AI, you might be seen as falling behind. To be fair, the bar is pretty low at the moment — the rush to adopt AI has led to some pretty bizarre use cases that simply check the box. BetaKit talked about this timely identity crisis in their recent article: Are you an AI company or a company that uses AI? The distinction is important — but maybe not for very long. Let’s go back to the early days of the internet. To be considered an “internet” company, you were an ISP like AOL or CompuServe. These companies essentially “built the internet” with modems, phone lines, and networks. Of course, internet-based companies today don’t lay down cables, but they still benefit from the literal groundwork laid by those early ISPs. A figurative “ground-breaking” comparable for the AI era is Canadian darling Cohere. They’re paving the way for the next wave of applied AI companies who have focused industry knowledge and know the right corners to precisely apply AI. The flow of opportunities begins with companies like Cohere, who build foundational models. It then extends to applied AI companies that leverage these models to address real-world problems, and finally to AI adopters — the customers who use these solutions in their business operations. As AI continues to evolve, value will be unlocked by those who not only adopt it but apply it thoughtfully and strategically—just as we’re doing at Healthkind, in healthcare.
