Updates

  • October 28 to November 1 is Canadian Patient Safety Week. This year's theme, "What comes to mind when you think about healthcare harm?", invites us all to reflect on safety in health care environments. Our safety coach program empowers staff to observe, support, and promote error prevention across the hospital. Through peer-to-peer coaching, we're building a culture of safety and aiming for zero harm. Throughout the week, our safety team are hosting talks at the hospital to highlight the safety coach program, essential error prevention tools, and other initiatives we've implemented to reduce harm and foster a culture of safety across the hospital. https://bit.ly/48mebHv #CPSW2024 #PatientSafety #CaringSafely #UnderstandHarm

That's a wrap on #ChildHealthCan2024! Congrats to our Kids Come First Health Team - Équipe santé Enfants avant tout for winning the People Choice Award for their Vaccinate & Up to Date campaign poster. Also winning at #ChildHealthCan2024 was the new and highly successful provincial Extensive Needs Service program (ENS), which is transforming the lives of kids like Kairo and Jennifer! Launched in April 2023, this proof-of-concept program – the first of its kind in Canada - has made a huge difference in the lives of children with complex neurodevelopmental health needs in Ontario. ENS was showcased comprehensively at Children's Healthcare Canada's National Conference this week. The network of organizations delivering ENS have high hopes that the government of #Ontario will continue to fund and expand this landmark program, ensuring some of our most vulnerable kids have the care they need. • It’s Respiratory Therapy Week and we’re celebrating the amazing respiratory therapists, or RTs, at Holland Bloorview who play a vital role in supporting clients’ respiratory needs – including providing the specialized training families need to transition safely back home. “I love being a respiratory therapist! It’s a unique and rewarding experience. The hospital’s client- and family-centred practice means that we not only treat patients but also get to support their families/caregivers, which makes every success even more meaningful." "Our collaborative and multi-disciplinary environment fosters professional growth and encourages innovative approaches to care. For me, working in such a supportive and progressive setting empowers me to excel in my field while contributing to the health and well-being of the community,” shares Pegah, an RT who works in the complex continuing care inpatient unit, which supports some of the hospital’s most medically-complex patients.

  • In the 1950s, the Habilitation Program was established at our hospital, which later evolved into The Independence Program. This three-week program as it stands now gives young adults with physical or cognitive disabilities an opportunity to live at a university or college residence and work on goals related to living away from home. • Meet Felicia Mojica-Lau, our extern coordinator and advanced practice nurse educator! Felicia has spent over six years here at Holland Bloorview, where her career has blossomed. As the extern coordinator, she's responsible for leading the planning, education, practice and integration of the externs at the hospital. The enhanced extern program is funded by the Ontario Ministry of Health and enables hospitals to supplement existing human health resources in a flexible way to meet each organization’s unique needs. Externs, who are clinical learners employed as unregulated care providers, are provided with experiential opportunities to learn, apply, and grow their skills under the supervision of regulated care providers. Holland Bloorview is proud to have implemented this program in the Fall of 2022. Since that time, we have welcomed over 60 nursing, respiratory therapy, physiotherapy, and occupational therapy externs, advancing our commitment to training the next generation of healthcare professionals and transforming care through education. Felicia finds great joy in her work. “As extern coordinator, I have the privilege of preparing, inspiring, and enhancing the clinical competence and confidence of the next generation of health care professionals." She also appreciates the strong sense of teamwork, noting, “I’m very lucky to work with a great team that I can rely on for advice and expertise.” Learn more about Felicia’s incredible journey and how she’s nurturing the next generation of health care professionals at Holland Bloorview https://bit.ly/48bAU94 #TeamHB #WorkingatHollandBloorview
