Today, we hosted a “virtual” focused conversation to explore how we might act as individuals to honour Canada’s National Day for Truth and Reconciliation. O: What are some of things that you have done in the past to mark this day? R: What are you hopeful about? I: What is something everyone can do? D: What will you do on Sept 30 to take a small step toward Reconciliation? We posted some of the responses from our team in our monthly newsletter, what is your answer and reflection then? 🤔

facilitating a culture of participation
About us
ICA Associates Inc. is a Canadian-based "social-enterprise" consulting and training firm that specializes in participatory group processes. We consult as facilitators of participatory group processes, large and small, in any sector, with any organization that is interested in engaging people. For example grass-roots community-based strategic planning for municipalities, employee-driven organizational transformation in companies, system changing collaboration among non-profits, etc. All our consultants are certified professional facilitators. All of our customers believe there is wisdom in the groups they seek to engage with. Our training programs share the lessons of the past 50 years of international community development and organizational development experience through a body of knowledge known as the Technology of Participation or ToP Methods (TM). We call ourselves "social entrepreneurs" because ICA Associates Inc. was created by the Canadian Institute of Cultural Affairs, a charity with deep roots in Canada and links to sister organizations in 30 countries around the world, most of which are involved in community development. Both ICA Associates Inc. and the Canadian Institute of Cultural Affairs share values and are committed to "facilitating a culture of participation."

Humanizing Strategy | Helping social profit leaders navigate change through participatory planning that aligns their team, improves morale, and helps everyone buy in to the goals of the organization.
The Big Unarticulated Issue... I apprecaite this thoughtfully designed manual to accompany the"Facilitating Conciliation" training as part of the Advanced Facilitators Program at ICA Associates Inc. These manuals are always great go to resources during and after the course. I wanted to share one way the skills gained here are useful in my organizational development work. This particular course dives into the complexities of conflict beyond just problem-solving and is incredibly relevant for any organization or team looking to not only resolve disputes but also rebuild trust and heal relationships. ➡️In my planning work, the focus often gravitates toward community impact, fundraising, and service delivery. However, organizations frequently encounter a less visible, yet equally critical issue—the "big unarticulated issue." ➡️Organizations sometimes overlook internal challenges such as leadership transitions, board tensions, evolving missions, or operational inefficiencies. These challenges are rarely discussed openly but can create barriers to long-term success if left unaddressed. These challenges, often described as the "big unarticulated issue" (Mick & Fournier, 1998), are internal barriers that aren’t immediately visible but affect long-term performance. ➡️They’re the factors that go unspoken in boardrooms and planning meetings, often because they are difficult to address or because the focus is drawn toward more immediate external priorities. ➡️By focusing on addressing these areas, organizations can build stronger foundations, better equipped to face future challenges while staying true to their mission. Subtle, yet intentional, shifts in internal operations often lead to significant improvements in overall effectiveness and impact. This skills equip me with advanced tools and strategies to guide teams through challenging dynamics, turning conflict into a pathway for growth and understanding. This is about creating spaces where all voices are heard, and resolutions lead to stronger, healthier connections within your organization. Blessed Monday! #strategy #OrganizationalDevelopment #conflict #planning #nonprofit #socialprofit

Marvelous!!! I love it sooooooo much!
"Look for the root of the conflict: What is keeping it alive?" "There's not always a clear winner." "We often fail to ask: What role am I playing in this conflict?" I had the true pleasure of spending a few days this week thinking about conflict. Admittedly, I was nervous stepping into the ICA Associates Inc. classroom at the start of the Facilitating Conciliation course. I don't love conflict. And sometimes I make it worse by deflecting and trying to avoid it. Jo Nelson and Scott Russell guided our group through an array of facilitative approaches to better understanding conflict and we practiced tools for addressing it. As with all ICA courses, I learned as much from the stories shared by the other participants as from the course material. Thank you Manal Sayid, MBA, Xin Wang, Andrea Bryan, MBA, Debra D. Kerby MBA MSc, Luyse, and Justin for sharing your experiences and wisdom. It was great to be back in the classroom and scheming again with my study buddy Dwayne Cline! Without fail, my pens were flying. Please enjoy the course notes below, which contain a few glimpses of what we learned together. #Facilitation #ConflictResolution #Sketchnotes #GraphicRecording #Learning --- ✍ ✨ If your ideas could use a little more sparkle, let's chat.

Thank you for participation and sharing ❤️
Excited to be in training at ICA Associates Inc. with the iconic Jo Nelson and my mentor Scott Russell as we dialogue about Facilitating Conciliation and moving beyond conflict resolution. Blessed that I’ve met Manal Sayid, MBA in person and thankful to be in another course with my facilitation buddy Danielle Taschereau Mamers, PhD as she brings the content and conversation to life in a graphic recording. Great to be participating with Xin Wang again as she brings wisdom to every course. Glad I’ve met Andrea Bryan, MBA, Debra D. Kerby MBA MSc, Luyse and Justin. ☑️ We’ve discussed what fuels and sustains conflict ☑️ Diagnosed the levels of conflict ☑️ Worked through the phases of conciliation and conflict resolution ☑️ Learned about tools for conciliation and conflict resolution Found out from a study on conflict management styles, by the Psychology Department of the University of Calgary, that my Avoidance of conflict is 1% and my style is a blend of 91% Compromising and 91% Dominating. 💯 accurate! Looking forward to helping others with what I’m learning. #TopMethods #ConflictResolution #Facilitation #MeetingsThatWork #ConflictManagementStyles #Conciliation #Leadership #IAF #ICAA #FacilitationWeek

Today, September 10, is the official publication date of The Art of Focused Conversation, Second Edition! It is also the day of a debate between the current American presidential candidates. To celebrate the publication date of The Art of Focused Conversation, Second Edition, I offer a possible focused conversation for reflecting on the debate. Possible Focused Conversation on the American Presidential Debate To have with yourself or with others who are interested in exploring the debate experience Assumption: People want to move beyond their gut-level responses to something useful. Rational Aim: To think through impact and implications of the debate to personal action Experiential Aim: To move beyond gut-level reactions to more thoughtful response The Conversation: Context: Let’s work through our responses to this debate. O. What words or phrases did you actually hear one of the candidates say? (quote them) What images stood out for you? (describe what you actually saw) R. What part of this debate was exciting or compelling for you? What part of this debate was frightening or depressing? What part made you want to turn it off? I. What is something you learned from this debate? About the candidates and their intentions? About yourself? What are you pondering now? Had an incredible week in the Art and Science of Participation course by ICA Associates Inc. ✔️Thoroughly enjoyed the refresher on leading Focused Conversations, Consensus Workshops and Strategic Planning. ✔️Learning about Complex Facilitation Design has changed the way I will prepare for meetings and facilitation. Working through real life scenarios for hours ingrained the process. ✔️I will apply Charting Documents to the way I read and retain material. ✔️Spent time with several amazing colleagues. Had so much fun learning with my facilitation buddy Danielle Taschereau Mamers, PhD. Danielle and Carrie-Anne Atkins, PMP privileged me as being their ‘keynote speaker’ in the mixed-housing scenario. ✔️Grateful for the skilled experitse and wisdom of John Miller, Scott Russell and Joanna Barclay. ✔️Looking forward to helping many organizations with what I’ve learned. #Facilitation #ICA #IAF #StrategicPlanning #Leadership #MeetingsThatWork

An amazing summary of an amazing week with an amazing group of professionals. Thanks Danielle.
Art & Science of Participation: that’s a wrap! There is a special magic in immersive learning with others. I’ve been fortunate to have many learning experiences over my career. But very few have involved spending six full days thinking, sharing, and practicing with a team. From deepening my experience with ToP tools to delving into complex design and client relations, my brain (and pens!) was working overtime. We honed our facilitation skills, paying special attention to strategic planning, team building, action planning, and appreciative inquiry. As a special bonus, I got to try my hand at a bit of graphic facilitation! In the days since, I’ve been reflecting on values, the role of fun in work, the value of sustained time with a group, and more. I’ve got a few comics in the works (my favorite way to reflect)… Thank you to our wonderful training team at ICA Associates Inc.: John Miller, Joanna Barclay, and Scott Russell. And endless appreciation to the other participants. I learned so much from you, Natalie Zend, Dwayne Cline, Erin, Mylène Lamoureux-Duquette, Andrea, Carrie-Anne Atkins, PMP, Meredith Kennedy, and Karine. Here’s a “learner’s eye view” on the week-long course. #Facilitation #StrategicPlanning #Participation #GraphicFacilitation #Sketchnotes
