With ICFs, a small team of carpenters can easily build a house foundation without needing specialized workers. Unlike traditional methods where you have to set up forms, place rebar, pour concrete, and remove the forms, ICF construction simply involves stacking blocks until reaching the desired height. Rebar placement is straightforward due to the unique webs in the ICF blocks. We have known for a century how to build buildings to resist tornadoes, but have chosen not to, partly because of a mostly untested intuition that doing so would be impractical or too costly. In part of the US study Natural Hazard Mitigation Saves, my colleagues at ImageCat Inc. cast doubt on that intuition, finding that above-code wind design in the US would save far more than it costs. Here's a 13-minute video summarizing a recent benefit-cost analysis of a Canadian approach to above-code wind design. Like ImageCat and possibly others, I find that Canada can afford wind-resilient homes and that building them would cost Canadian society far less in the long run to own wind-resilient housing, as opposed to the least-first-cost, life-safe designs we build now. https://lnkd.in/gGwPhyek
