About us
The Intergovernmental Forum on Mining, Minerals, Metals and Sustainable Development (IGF) supports its more than 80 member countries in advancing their sustainable development goals through effective laws, policies, and regulations for the mining sector. We help governments take action to develop inclusive and gender-equitable practices, optimize financial benefits, support livelihoods, and safeguard the environment. Our work covers the full mining life cycle, from exploration to mine closure, and projects of all sizes, from artisanal mining to large-scale operations. Guided by our members’ needs, we provide in-country assessments, capacity building, technical training, publications, and events to advance best practices, peer learning, and engagement with industry and civil society. The International Institute for Sustainable Development has hosted the IGF Secretariat since October 2015. Core funding is provided by the governments of Canada and the Netherlands.

We are currently participating in the four day IGFMining Environmental Social Impact Assessment Tool Training. This training, organized by the Ministry of Mines and Mining Development is a crucial initiative aimed at enhancing our understanding of Environmental and Social Impact Assessments (ESIAs), known locally as the Environmental Impact Assessment, in mining. This training is important to us because: 1️⃣ We are gaining essential skills in policy analysis that will empower us to critically evaluate and influence mining policies in our communities. 2️⃣ The social impacts of mining often disproportionately affect women, from displacement to health risks. By understanding these impacts, we can advocate for more equitable practices and protections for women. 3️⃣ We are committed to sharing this knowledge with women at the grassroots level. By disseminating what we learn, we will equip our fellow women mining associations to take informed action and advocate for their rights and well-being. #WomenInMining #SustainableMining

We just concluded our virtual regional training on International Tax and the Extractive Industries, jointly led by the IGFMining and OECD Tax, in partnership with the African Tax Administration Forum (ATAF), the Centro Interamericano de Administraciones Tributarias - CIAT and the Asian Development Bank (ADB). Through eight modules, with a mix of recorded lectures and online case studies, participants from tax administrations, ministries of finance and ministries of mines developed skills in topics such as transfer pricing, applying a stronger understanding of the mining industries to their risk assessment tools. We had a fantastic group of participants from all around the world! Below is a picture of the last session with the group I got to know the best, with French-speaking participants from North Africa, West Africa and Madagascar. A very special thanks to everyone who contributed. It was a team effort!

We have rescheduled this webinar from October 9 to October 23 due to a technical difficulty. Please register again if you had planned to join at the earlier date. I am looking forward to it. This webinar is a good way to follow up on discussions held at #climateweek with colleagues from the Natural Resource Governance Institute, Columbia Center on Sustainable Investment and Oxfam International, and some of the themes of our conference with the Inter-American Development Bank on the Future of Resource Taxation last week.
WEBINAR | How should governments determine which minerals are critical? The answer varies based on a country’s specific context and priorities. Join us on October 23 (📅 rescheduled) for a webinar that will explore how governments can better understand the concept of criticality and assess related opportunities and risks. We’ll also provide guidance for countries aiming to maximize financial benefits from their critical minerals.
