A space where we share, connect, heal, renew and celebrate Indigenous cultures in Calgary.

About us

In the heart of Calgary, where the Bow and Elbow rivers meet, a transformative project is taking shape: The Indigenous Gathering Place at the Confluence. This unique space is set to be the first in the city devoted exclusively to Indigenous peoples' ceremonial practices—a place where culture, spirituality, and community converge. Our vision for 2027 is to create a sacred venue that serves as the epicenter for sharing, healing, connecting, and celebrating the rich tapestry of Indigenous cultures. The Indigenous Gathering Place will be a culturally safe environment where urban Indigenous Peoples can nurture their spiritual, emotional, cultural, and social well-being. Aligned with the Truth and Reconciliation Commission’s Call to Action #21, our initiative represents a vital step in supporting the needs of Indigenous Peoples in Calgary. We are dedicated to preserving Indigenous practices and languages, and honoring the wisdom of Elders, facilitating a legacy of knowledge that bridges generations. Founded in 2018, The Indigenous Gathering Place Society of Calgary is an independent, Indigenous-led non-profit organization guided by the wisdom of Elders. We are committed to establishing this space that honours Treaty 7 and welcomes urban Indigenous Peoples and non-Indigenous people. Our work embodies the principle of ethical space, integrating Indigenous and Western approaches to foster mutual understanding and respect. In collaboration with local Indigenous Peoples, Indigenous-serving organizations, and governmental partners, we are dedicated to making this sacred space a reality.

  • Today, on Sisters in Spirit Day, we remember and honour the lives of Indigenous women, girls, and Two-Spirit people who are missing or have been taken from us too soon. Our hearts are with the families and communities who carry their memories and stories. Today, we hold space for their grief, resilience, and strength. As we gather across the country, we light a fire of remembrance and a call for justice. Together, we stand united in love, awareness, and action, calling for meaningful change to protect our women and girls. We invite all to learn, listen, and support efforts to end violence against Indigenous Peoples. Let us commit to honouring their spirits through action, advocacy, and allyship.

  • Today, we pause to acknowledge the hard truths of our history, and the ongoing journey toward reconciliation. Listening is just the first step—embracing discomfort and committing to action are what will bring true healing and change. Let's honour Indigenous voices, truths, and experiences, not just today, but every day. Together, we can walk this path with intention and purpose.

  • Reconciliation is more than apologies — it’s about ensuring the same harm is never repeated. It means breaking down the systemic barriers that continue to marginalize Indigenous Peoples in colonial institutions and making sure meaningful change is woven into the fabric of society. At the Indigenous Gathering Place, reconciliation means action. It’s about centering Indigenous leadership, restoring our cultures, and creating culturally safe spaces where Indigenous Peoples can heal, grow, and thrive. Apologies without action are hollow, and we are committed to building a future where truth and justice walk hand in hand. As Monday approaches, ask yourself: How will you ensure that ‘sorry’ doesn’t have to be said again? Reconciliation is not just reflection — it’s about making change, now and for the next generations.

  • Canada Day is often seen as a celebration of the nation, but for many Indigenous Peoples, it is a day that overlooks the painful history and atrocities committed in the name of colonialism. This day serves as a reminder of the lands taken, cultures suppressed, and lives lost in the creation of Canada. Today, we encourage everyone to reflect on these truths. Wear orange and take a moment of silence to honour the many Indigenous children whose lives were tragically cut short. Let’s acknowledge this day as one of mourning and remembrance and commit to a future where truth and reconciliation are at the forefront of our national consciousness.

As this important month ends, we must remember that our commitment to learning, truth, and reconciliation should continue year-round. Calgary is making strides in this journey with the vision of an Indigenous Gathering Place—a space for sharing, connecting, healing, and celebrating Indigenous cultures. This place will be open for learning year-round, offering opportunities for everyone to engage with and understand the rich history and contributions of Indigenous Peoples. Today, on National Indigenous Peoples Day, we reflect on the rich cultures, histories, and contributions of Indigenous Peoples. Check out our recent OpEd that imagines a future where Calgary has its first Indigenous Gathering Place—a space envisioned for sharing, connecting, healing, renewing, and celebrating Indigenous cultures. This is more than a physical location; it's a commitment to reconciliation and a tribute to the wisdom and legacies of our Elders. This Gathering Place represents a step forward in responding to the Calls to Action and ensuring that Indigenous people lead the sharing of their stories and histories. It’s time that we finally break down barriers and prioritize Indigenous-led spaces. Together, we can create a world-renowned place where visitors can witness the traditions and history of Treaty 7, and where we do not repeat the mistakes of the past. Read the full OpEd to learn more about our vision and join us in making this dream a reality. Indigenous Gathering Place Society of Calgary

  • Imagine June 21, 2027. Calgary is celebrating National Indigenous Peoples Day, and preparing to host the 2027 North American Indigenous Games, and marking the 150th anniversary of Treaty 7. We proudly welcome everyone to Calgary’s first Indigenous Gathering Place, a testament to our commitment to truth and reconciliation. Picture a serene, sacred space at Moh’kinsstis, where the Bow and Elbow Rivers meet. Hear traditional songs, the rhythm of drums, and children learning ancestral languages. Experience the harmony with nature, the smell of sweetgrass and sage, and the reverence of the smudge. In 2027, this Gathering Place stands as a living embodiment of our cultures, where stories are shared, spirits are renewed, and identities are celebrated. It’s a space for powwows, cultural gatherings, storytelling, traditional foods, and healing. To bring this vision to life, we need the support of our entire community today. • 🌞 Today, we honour the Summer Solstice, a time of great significance for many Indigenous Peoples in Treaty 7 territory. This longest day of the year marks a moment to celebrate the warmth and light that nurtures all life. The Summer Solstice is a time for gathering, ceremonies, and deep connection with the land and community. As we embrace this day, let us reflect on the teachings of the Elders, the importance of balance and renewal, and our shared responsibility to protect and respect our environment. May we listen, learn, and stand in solidarity with our Indigenous brothers and sisters, honouring their rich traditions and wisdom. #SummerSolstice #IndigenousWisdom #Treaty7 #Honouringtraditions #reconciliation

There are many places in Calgary devoted to culture and spirituality, but none specifically dedicated to Indigenous Peoples’ ceremonial practices. Creating a building for an Indigenous Gathering Place will serve as a sanctuary for healing and reconciliation, bringing together Indigenous and non-Indigenous communities to learn and grow together.     #IGP #IndigenousLed #ReconciliACTION
