Canada Day is often seen as a celebration of the nation, but for many Indigenous Peoples, it is a day that overlooks the painful history and atrocities committed in the name of colonialism. This day serves as a reminder of the lands taken, cultures suppressed, and lives lost in the creation of Canada. Today, we encourage everyone to reflect on these truths. Wear orange and take a moment of silence to honour the many Indigenous children whose lives were tragically cut short. Let’s acknowledge this day as one of mourning and remembrance and commit to a future where truth and reconciliation are at the forefront of our national consciousness.

Imagine June 21, 2027. Calgary is celebrating National Indigenous Peoples Day, and preparing to host the 2027 North American Indigenous Games, and marking the 150th anniversary of Treaty 7. We proudly welcome everyone to Calgary’s first Indigenous Gathering Place, a testament to our commitment to truth and reconciliation. Picture a serene, sacred space at Moh’kinsstis, where the Bow and Elbow Rivers meet. Hear traditional songs, the rhythm of drums, and children learning ancestral languages. Experience the harmony with nature, the smell of sweetgrass and sage, and the reverence of the smudge. In 2027, this Gathering Place stands as a living embodiment of our cultures, where stories are shared, spirits are renewed, and identities are celebrated. It’s a space for powwows, cultural gatherings, storytelling, traditional foods, and healing. To bring this vision to life, we need the support of our entire community today. The Summer Solstice is a time for gathering, ceremonies, and deep connection with the land and community. As we embrace this day, let us reflect on the teachings of the Elders, the importance of balance and renewal, and our shared responsibility to protect and respect our environment. There are many places in Calgary devoted to culture and spirituality, but none specifically dedicated to Indigenous Peoples’ ceremonial practices. Creating a building for an Indigenous Gathering Place will serve as a sanctuary for healing and reconciliation, bringing together Indigenous and non-Indigenous communities to learn and grow together.     #IGP #IndigenousLed #ReconciliACTION
