🔥 Zombie Fires: The Silent Threat Beneath Canada’s Wildlands 🔥 #DYK in Canada, wildfires continue burning long after the flames are out? These hidden dangers, known as zombie fires, smolder underground through winter, only to reignite with a vengeance in the spring. As we face increasingly unpredictable wildfire seasons, these fires present a unique challenge. They spread unnoticed, travel far underground, and emerge when least expected—turning yesterday’s safety zone into tomorrow’s danger zone. The impact isn’t just environmental; it’s a year-round threat to our communities, our ecosystems, and our climate. 🌲🌿🍁 Imagine the risk to the vast boreal forests that span our nation. These forests are not just carbon sinks; they’re the lifeblood of countless species and local economies. But zombie fires threaten this balance, releasing massive amounts of carbon and leaving behind a scarred, barren landscape. Now more than ever, we must enhance our detection and prevention strategies to combat these stealthy infernos. The fight against zombie fires isn’t just about protecting today—it’s about safeguarding our future. 🌍💪 Call to Action: What are your thoughts on the growing threat of zombie fires? Have you or your organization faced challenges with these underground blazes? How are how handling or mitigating the risks involved? Share your experiences in the comments below! 🔥✈🚁A Day in the Life of a Wildfire Drone Pilot: The Importance of Airspace Safety in Wildfire Operations🔥✈🚁 Air Operations Branch Director: "Do we all know what areas we're working in today?" Lead Drone Pilot: "Yes, we're working the hotspots on the South in Div Tango, the heli's are working the west side of the fire in Div Charlie, and we're all on 124.675 advisory to deconflict." Air Ops BD: "Correct!! What are our altitudes?" Lead Drone Pilot: "Cap's at 5, same for the NOTAM. Outbound at 3, inbound at 2." Air Ops BD: "Thank you, it's nice to work with air ops folks who get it." Lead Drone Pilot: "It's important we all communicate and stay safe in the air and on the ground, which helps us all to be as efficient and effective as possible." 🎯 Effective communication and airspace deconfliction are critical to wildfire management. At IN-FLIGHT Data, our experienced team coordinates closely with manned aircraft teams to ensure safety and efficiency. By working together on the VFR advisory frequency, our drones can safely operate while helicopters and fixed-wing aircraft perform their tasks nearby. ✨ Airspace deconfliction ensures every asset operates safely without compromising the mission. Our Lead Pilots are trained to maintain situational awareness and communicate in real-time, particularly during recent wildfire operations where drones monitored hotspots while helicopters conducted water drops. ✈🚁✈ Coordinating multiple aircraft in wildfire environments requires expertise in air traffic management, real-time data sharing, and adaptability. Our team's BVLOS (Beyond Visual Line of Sight) capabilities ensure safe drone integration, providing essential data to firefighting teams on the ground, leading to faster wildfire containment. Our commitment to safety and efficiency drives every mission. By prioritizing airspace safety, we ensure that our drones provide valuable insights without disrupting manned aircraft or other aerial fire operations. 🔥🦌 A Day in the Life as a Wildfire Drone Pilot (Part 3): Moose on the Loose 🦌 🔥 Ops Section Chief (from AUS): "You saw a what??!??" Lead Pilot: "A moose. They're everywhere up here. They're native to this part of the world. They're huge animals and they're really unpredictable when they're scared. Not sure if it was a bull or a cow but it sure ran off in a hurry." Ops Section Chief: "So you saw a cow?!?" Lead Pilot: "No, a moose! Sometimes they even have antlers!" Ops Section Chief: "Well, being this close to the North Pole, I'm sure some of Santa's sleigh drivers are just checking things out. Glad you kept your distance and stayed safe!" 🎅 #WildlifeSafety You know, when operating drones for wildfires and protecting remote and rugged environments like the vast territory of Northeastern Alberta Canada, its important to remember that moose roam freely, and that safety is our top priority. Our experienced BVLOS (Beyond Visual Line of Sight) pilots understand the importance of staying alert and respecting wildlife. These majestic creatures can be unpredictable, especially when spooked, and it takes a skilled team to navigate these unique challenges. 🎯 Working in such environments requires more than just technical know-how—it demands a deep understanding of the local ecosystem and wildlife behavior. Our team's experience ensures that not only do we capture the critical data our clients need, but we also do so without disturbing the natural habitat. This is crucial for the safety of both our pilots and the wildlife they encounter. Every flight is a reminder of the unpredictable nature of the wilderness. With our BVLOS operations, we're able to monitor vast areas safely and effectively, providing our clients with valuable insights while ensuring minimal impact on the environment. It's this combination of expertise, technology, and respect for nature that really sets us apart. ✔ So whether it’s spotting a moose or avoiding other wildlife hazards, our team’s experience in the field ensures every mission is carried out with the highest standards of safety and professionalism. We are very sad today. 😟 We recently had the privilege to fly inside Jasper National Park and capture some aerial data relating to the pine beetle infestation that likely contributed to the wildfire's rapid growth. Be safe everyone. 🔥 #community #resilience #publicsafety Filmed with permission of Parks Canada. All permits obtained.

🔥 🐻 A Day in the Life as a Wildfire Drone Pilot (Part 2): Navigating Wildlife and Wildfires 🐻🔥 Ops Section Chief: "How did it go last night?" Lead Pilot: "We only got about two-thirds done last night, got interrupted by a black bear." Ops Section Chief: "By a what?!?" Lead Pilot: "A black bear. Scared us like you wouldn't believe!" Ops Section Chief: "Got chased outta the woods by a bear, hey? Haha. Happens to us all at some point. Glad you stayed safe!" Our work sometimes involves unexpected encounters with wildlife, like when our Complex Operations flight crew had a run-in with a black bear. Despite the interruption, the team remained focused on our mission of wildfire management. Operating drones in such environments demands quick thinking, adaptability, and above all, safety. We take pride in our ability to handle these challenges while ensuring our team's well-being. Bear safety is a crucial part of our training. Our team follows guidelines from Alberta Parks, ensuring we stay "Bear Smart" by carrying bear spray, making noise to avoid surprising wildlife, and maintaining a safe distance if we encounter bears. These practices are essential to our field operations, allowing us to stay safe while delivering vital data. For more information on bear safety, check out the resources at Alberta Parks and the Alberta Government websites. Throughout the day, our Ops Section Chief and Lead Pilot keep communication lines open. "How's the mission progress now?" the Ops Section Chief asks. "We're back on track and gathering the data we need," the Lead Pilot reports. Our experienced BVLOS (Beyond Visual Line of Sight) operators play a crucial role in navigating these complex situations, ensuring that we provide accurate and timely information to support wildfire management efforts. As we wrap up the day's operations, the Ops Section Chief reflects, "It's not every day you encounter a bear, but it's all part of the job." The Lead Pilot agrees, "Staying safe and completing the mission is what matters most." At IN-FLIGHT Data, our team's expertise in BVLOS operations and wildlife safety ensures that we deliver exceptional results, no matter the obstacles. We're dedicated to supporting our clients and communities with the highest standards of safety and precision. #WildfireTech #FirefightingDrones #BVLOS #Operations #PublicSafety #DroneInnovation #EmergencyResponse #DronesForGood #Drones
