About us

Indspire is an Indigenous national registered charity that invests in the education of Indigenous people for the long-term benefit of these individuals, their families and communities, and Canada. With the support of its funding partners, Indspire disburses financial awards, delivers programs, and shares resources with the goal of improving educational outcomes for First Nations, Inuit, and Métis students. Through Indspire’s education offerings, we provide resources to students, educators, communities, and other stakeholders who are committed to improving success for Indigenous youth. In 2020/21, Indspire awarded $20 million through 6,246 bursaries and scholarships to First Nations, Inuit, and Métis youth, making it the largest funder of Indigenous post-secondary education outside the federal government.

Storytelling is a powerful way to keep culture vibrant - and for students like Taea Rattlesnake, it’s also the chance to share one’s vision with the wider world. This Plains Cree student is studying musical theatre performance at St. Lawrence College in a hands-on, conservatory-style program; she’s supported by the Roberta L. Jamieson Bursary through our Building Brighter Futures: Bursaries & Scholarships (BBF) program. She says: “This bursary was a major stepping stone in my educational journey, and it means that I'm able to move away from home and get the training I need without worrying about how I'll be able to afford it.” Taea has big plans for her post-graduation life, too: “My hope is to save up enough that after my schooling, I'll be able to move to a larger city nearby. Toronto has excellent opportunities for theatre, and the dream is to one day make it to New York City. I've known since I was very young that this is what I want and need to do with my life. Telling stories and connecting with audiences is such a fulfilling career…Every cent is another step closer to realizing my dreams and making some sort of impact through the stories I tell. It truly means so much. Thank you for your generosity and support.” Learn more about Taea’s story here. 👇 https://lnkd.in/d8WJTFK #BBF #Indigenous #Education #IndigenousExcellence #IndigenousStudents #Charity #CanadianCharity #NonProfit

Role Models matter. Who teaches the teachers – and what/how are they learning? At Indspire, we know how important it is for the success of First Nations, Inuit, and Métis learners to use Indigenous educational models, especially in an educational system where Indigenous students haven’t historically felt welcome. That’s why our Research & Impact Unit wanted to understand the experiences of Indigenous Bachelor of Education students, resulting in the creation of their latest report: A Review of Indigenous Education Models: Bachelor of Education Students. 58 Building Brighter Futures: Bursaries & Scholarships (BBF) recipients shared thoughts about their post-secondary journey with us, resulting in a unique window into their varied experiences. Created by researchers from the Research Knowledge Nest and featuring beautiful cover art by the gifted Alanah Jewell, this insightful report examines the many different ways that Indigenous B.Ed. students are preparing to mentor and teach the next generation. Read the report here. 👇 https://lnkd.in/eTNkUzFB Check out this infographic for highlights from the report. 👇 https://lnkd.in/eVpH3pia #Research #IndigenousResearch #Indigenous #IndigenousExcellence #IndigenousPeople #IndigenousStudents

Our hearts are saddened today to learn of the passing of Alex Janvier, a member of the Indspire family (Lifetime Achievement – 2002) whose work changed the way Indigenous art and artists were appreciated across Turtle Island and around the world. A member of Cold Lake First Nations (Treaty Six Territory) and a residential school survivor, he attended the Alberta College of Art in Calgary, AB, where he began honing his craft and experimenting with modernist abstraction. Janvier used his unique and characteristic fusion of modernism and traditional Indigenous motifs and themes to not only create stunning and dynamic works, but also to provide pointed visual commentary on issues affecting Indigenous peoples, such as outstanding land claims, environmental destruction, the residential school system, the Meech Lake Accord, and the Kanehsatà:ke Resistance. He was a member of what was often referred to as the “Indigenous Group of Seven” along with Daphne Odjig, Norval Morrisseau, Carl Ray, Joseph Sanchez, Jackson Beardy, and Eddy Cobiness. Janvier served as an Indigenous art ambassador, travelling and exhibiting around the world, and his large-scale works appear in many notable galleries and institutions, including the Museum of Civilization in Ottawa, ON, where his Morning Star mural enhances the dome of the Great Hall as a permanent exhibit. He received many accolades for his work, including the Order of Canada (2007), the Governor General’s Award for Visual and Media Arts (2008), and the Alberta Order of Excellence (2010), along with numerous honorary degrees from post-secondary institutions. Serving as a mentor and role model to a new generation of Indigenous artists, his inspiration came: “From everywhere, from the land, sky, stars, moon, sun, the universe. From earth, land, water, woodland, prairie, mountains, and people, some animals. From memory of ancient stories…From my own inspiration acceptance of who I have become. From love, to be who I am, and who I became.” Our thoughts are with Alex Janvier’s family, friends, and community during this challenging time.

ᓄᓇᕗᑦ ᐅᓪᓗᖓ! Happy Nunavut Day to everyone who’s celebrating today! It’s the anniversary of the signing of the 1999 Nunavut Land Claims Agreement, which recognized Nunavut as a separate territory – and which was, at the time, the largest land claim agreement between Indigenous peoples and a country ever negotiated. We hope that everyone celebrating today enjoys warmth, laughter, and community…along with some country food, of course. 😊 Happy Nunavut Day from all of us at Indspire! #Nunavut #NunavutDay
