Post 38 of 50 Stories of Indwell: For the next two weeks we’re celebrating hope and homes in Waterloo Region. In fact, next Thursday, October 17, you’re invited to our Celebrating 50 Years: Waterloo Reception — enjoy some delicious refreshments and an inspiring program on how you can be part of the solution to homelessness. See indwell.ca/events for details and tickets. On May 1, 2022 Indwell officially began a partnership with Waterloo Regional Housing, operating two buildings owned by WRH — Weber Street Apartments in Kitchener and Robert Kerr Manor in Cambridge. Through this partnership we were able to offer supports to almost eighty tenants. This paved the way for more innovative partnerships — more about that later! Stay tuned for more stories of hope and homes in Waterloo Region! Pictured: 1) Robert Kerr Manor (top), exterior, and Weber St. Apartments (bottom), exterior, 2022. 2) Indwell staff take a happy selfie in front of a loaded van full of donations for new tenants, from a food and clothing drive organized by Waterloo Region churches, shortly after beginning our work in the region, 2022. 3) Tenants enjoy games during a collective kitchen event at Robert Kerr Manor, 2022.

"Local Lutheran Church members were adamant at least one of their former spiritual homes would become literal homes for residents in need, said Trinity Rev. Jordan Smith... 'Everyone was always very behind the housing partnership … You see the need in the community. For so many of our congregations this is a huge issue, addressing the housing need.'" We're so pleased that the former Faith Lutheran Church in Rosedale, Hamilton will have new life as supportive housing. In a unique sale agreement, we were able to purchase this 65-year-old church for half its appraised value, with the Hamilton Community Foundation stepping in to handle the mortgage. Thank you Trinity Lutheran Church and Hamilton Community Foundation! This partnership is a model of how unused spaces can be transformed to support those in need. Stay tuned for more updates!

Post 37 of 50 Stories of Indwell Last week we posted about The Oaks – 108 homes contained in three buildings built on the site of the historic Royal Oak Dairy. One of those buildings is Ain-dah-ing, meaning “home within our hearts” in Ojibwe. We’re honoured to have worked in partnership with Sacajawea Non-Profit Housing on this project, whose main offices are housed on the ground floor. The 13 homes at Ain-dah-ing are designated for Indigenous tenants, in response to the fact that Indigenous people make up a disproportionately large amount of unhoused people in Canada. At Indwell, we’re committed to humbly learn and grow in friendship and partnership with organizations who represent Indigenous people. As well as Sacajawea Non-Profit Housing, we’re grateful for the work of the Hamilton Regional Indian Centre, the Aboriginal Health Centre, Woodland Cultural Centre, and Atlohsa Family Healing Services, all of whom have provided invaluable supports, resources and education to Indwell staff and tenants. Pictured: 1) The original 2 ½-storey building housed milkwagon storage on the ground floor and horse stables above. Its brick façade and small horse-size windows, some lengthened for apartments, still reflect the site's historical past. The design is an interpretation of the local fauna and fauna, and includes a birch bark canoe, indigenous paddlers, and an eagle to represents courage & strength.
