Taking the 'waste' out of garbage.

About us

'Innovate' is at the forefront of waste diversion strategies for a number of sectors, including Multi-residential, Post Secondary Institutions, and the Aviation industry. In the multi-residential sector, providing unique and practical perspectives for developers, architects, Project Managers, designers and other stakeholders in the construction process, and operational and environmental excellence for Property and Operations Managers responsible for the day-to-day operation of these buildings. This includes waste and diversion tracking to augment GHG emissions reporting. This includes the multi-res subsector of student residences. In Post-Secondary institutions, Innovate is a trusted partner in the waste audit process and the related areas of waste reduction, management and zero waste planning. While in the aviation sector, through the IAWMA, our holistic knowledge of the waste industry, infrastructure, procurement, waste audit and 'upstream' materials has proven a great asset to its stakeholders. These services are also available to municipalities looking for a consulting firm that can provide practical and holistic waste diversion solutions for both their multi-residential and single family sectors, including their community housing assets. For the I,C & I sector 'Innovate' provides a full range of waste and recycling services, cost management programs, and outsourced purchasing of waste related, and environmental services and products. This is further enhanced by waste audit services, commodity management and a variety of alternatives to disposal for food and food process wastes. For those organisations pursuing a Zero Waste target, a True Advisor can be an asset to your team. Particularly when the consultant has more than 30 years of experience to add to the discussion. • Food Waste Planning...Often when customers and partners are looking for solutions they get hung up on a single approach to a problem, instead of the 'many arrows in the quiver' approach. In Toronto, particularly in multi-res, it is the segregation of recyclables and organics, and the placement of these materials down a chute, probably with a sorter at the bottom that rules most building design. The challenges of material contamination on the organic waste stream and 'scooge' (liquified waste) on the facilities and operators of these systems cannot be avoided with this prescribed approach. Taking a two pronged approach to food waste like this building in Vancouver, contamination is practically eliminated, and the messy fraction of the food waste is managed though an In-Sink-Erator unit, passing the materials on to a anaerobic digestion facility at the end of the pipe. Holistic waste management approaches, particularly as we head towards higher demands for circular solutions, are needed. Developers and architects should keep this in mind, particularly when most green building standards do not drive nearly enough forward thinking solutions to address future challenges. Reach out to Innovate Waste Solutions Corp. for a comprehensive review of your project, ideally before the plans are finalized! The earlier in the design process the better.

  • Watch your waste and recycling invoices, particularly if you are currently serviced by major multi-national waste haulers. Bin delivery or removal standard charges can be as high as $300. And 'convenience' fees for paying your bills are on the rise! Interesting times for the waste industry. Be sure to pre-negotiate these terms in your agreements...or keep your options open, while working with the Innovate team to create the best waste services platform available. #costmanagement #wasteconsulting

  • Several years ago it was decided that all municipal programs in Ontario should accept the same materials to prevent issues like contamination as residents moved or travelled from one jurisdiction to another. Now we have a pilot program recycling one of the most challenging materials in the province, the ubiquitous coffee cup, happening in a single jurisdiction. When you perform audits all over the province you see the challenges of contamination, and a pilot like this will just make things worse, not better. Yes, a material will ostensibly be recycled for this municipal stream in this city, but it will make communicating the limitations of commercial programs within the very same jurisdiction challenging at the very least. Commercial haulers will be forced to charge for contamination of their customer's recycling bins as resident employees misdirect materials. Thinking holistically about waste diversion is an absolute must. And if you are going to fund a pilot, make it a pilot that reduces consumption of this single use material to start with. #wasteaudit #wastereduction #wastediversion #coffeecups #singleuse

On a mission to divert 1 BILLION tonnes of waste from Landfill

Can coffee cups be recycled? The answer is for the most part...... What does that mean? This pilot requires residents to remove the lid and rinse the cup...... If that happens then the cup in theory goes to a mill and is recycled and the plastic liner would be landfill waste. Good news is 90ish% would be recycled and this saves trees! A better question is.... Is it economically feasible to recycle coffee cups in their current state? The article is a little unlcear. I've reached out to Circular Materials to get some clarity. When will the recycling part actually start? Also to find out if private haulers can participate as we have lots of customers interested in diverting waste from landfill. Someone sent me this posted and asked me if this is a good thing. I think any effort to divert waste from landfill is a great thing. Let's seek some clarity and structure for the pilot. I've been an advocate of compostables for QSRs (Quick Service Restaurants) for a long time since we did our pilot. We increase diverstion from 57% to 86% over night just by switching to compostables. It works because if there is any food/drink residue it helps with the composting process. A QSR could be 90%+ diversion from landfill with this model. It'll be interesting to see how this pans out. I visited PEI last week and their coffee cups go into their green bin compost program. I'll post soon on that.

  • Do you operate a multi-residential property in the City of Toronto where you are considering a move away from municipal service to a commercial solution? Before you contemplate this type of change, ensure that you are not also giving up 'grandfathered' access to your property for waste collection that you will likely not get back. If one discontinues services with the City, you will have to reapply basically as if you were a new build, with the same expectations of access that are needed for a new building. Call for some independant point of view before making this change...future proofing your waste management system can require more thorough consideration than a simple cost decision between suppliers. #waste #diversion #GRESB #Recycling #sustainability

  • Pleased to announce that Innovate is now a member of the Greater Toronto Apartment Association. Fantastic organization that does so much for its' members and the rental community at large...and the philanthropy that emanates from the membership is beyond impressive. Whenever members have a need to 'talk trash', Innovate will be there. Including this Thursday in a webinar discussing the management of Utility Costs. Thanks to Daryl and Kornelija for their help and support. https://lnkd.in/gPHxDgY6

  • Always fascinated by the fact that one of the most highly used systems in a multires property so often does not get the necessary attention in the development/design phase of a new project. Important features like accessibility, operational efficiency, and the end user experience, all relating to our 5C's of effective waste management should be considered. Seeing this photo, there are some challenges with this waste intake space...challenges which could have been avoided. Make certain that you have an expert in waste systems, operations and the resident experience on your development team. Consultants that simply meet the needs of local municipal waste standards are not equipped with the operational expertise, nor the overall residential building operators point of view, gleaned over 15+ years of working with them side-by-side. #wastemanagement #wastediversion #sustainability #operationalexcellence #costmanagement #wasteequipment #ergonomics

  • Green bin programs can be challenging, particularly with older multi-residential properties that are not set up with adequate space. Using an enclosure like this can help with secure placement of a green bin, and help both with resident engagement and tracking, along with the prevention of contamination with access control options in place. #5C's #wastediversion #multiresidential #condoliving

Stop food scraps from going to landfill, even from multifamily and dense downtown areas! User-friendly cart enclosures help drive up participation by isolating users from the less pleasant aspects of the process, and there's the option of an access control app to eliminate contamination too. Look out for them this week at #compost2024 in Daytona Beach, courtesy of US Composting Council and other events throughout the year. #foodwastereduction #wastediversion #multifamily #apartment #condominium #wastemanagement #recycling

Are you a developer of Multi-Res buildings in the City of Toronto? Many don't realize that updates to the Toronto Green Building Standard included a change to TGS1 including the option of a 'no-chute' waste handling platform, as well as 1, 2 and 3 chute options. Understanding the implications of waste chutes, and the opportunities that 'no-chute' buildings create should become a part of the design conversation early in the process of planning a building. Innovate Waste Solutions Corp. has the insight and experience to better understand this option...and if GRESB and Scope 3 GHG management are on your radar screen, your organization should be looking at this. We look forward to the conversation!
