Bureaucracy versus planet earth. With Border Carbon Adjustment becoming increasingly ubiquitous, risks exist of a proliferation of incompatible measurement, reporting and verification standards. This can generate harmful trade frictions and penalize developing countries. IISD’s latest report explores this and many other aspects of the BCA debate. Read more: https://lnkd.in/gw5-y68S

Ahead of the UN #Biodiversity Conference #COP16 in Cali, IISD’s Earth Negotiations Bulletin Team Lead, Dr. Elsa Tsioumani, breaks down key issues driving the upcoming negotiations of the Convention on Biological Diversity. A pillar of the talks is benefit-sharing from digital sequence information (#DSI) on genetic resources—in other words, determining who profits from the digitization of the world’s genetic diversity and how much is given back to its stewards. Gaps between negotiating parties are stark, but Dr. Tsioumani points out a spark of positive spirit in the lead-up ▶️ https://lnkd.in/gBQDXJ4V

As this year’s World Trade Organization (WTO) #TradeAndEnvironment Week coincides with the homestretch of negotiations on the world’s first global plastics treaty, the trade implications of the treaty are frequent topics of discussion. At this pivotal moment on the road to #INC5 in Busan, negotiators need to understand the possible trade-related implications of the treaty. How will the treaty be structured? What issues are likely to have the most trade-related implications? What are the next steps? Avoiding most trade frictions can be addressed easily through thoughtful plastics policy measures. IISD has identified the six most common types of plastic-related trade concerns and has proposed recommendations to ensure these are avoided. Read more ▶️ https://lnkd.in/gFikV9cm

Climate change impacts people in different ways depending on who they are and how their identify influences their position in society. 🔷 People living with disabilities are more likely to be negatively affected during floods 🔷 During storms, men are often actively helping others, putting them more at risk 🔷 Small-scale farmers are negatively impacted by drought due to the loss of plants and animals 🔷 Fisherwomen, with less access to boats, equipment and cash, are more impacted by warming oceans causing declining fish stocks Recent evidence shows that Nature-based Solutions for adaptation are more effective when delivered in a gender-responsive and socially inclusive manner. Our new booklet provides practical tips on how to recognize differences in needs and priorities to ensure that everyone can benefit from NbS for adaptation.
