Why iron deficiency is more common—and more serious—than you think: One in three US adults don’t get enough iron, which has a major effect on getting oxygen around your body. Find out how this common deficiency can lead to more severe health issues if untreated. BY TATYANA WOODALL National Geographic / Today we share an informative article published on October 25 in National Geographic / Having enough energy to get through the day is hard enough for most of us. But for one in three American adults with an iron deficiency, daily life can be even more exhausting. More than 2 billion people worldwide deal with some form of iron deficiency. Because the mineral is essential for several important biological functions, those with low levels of iron often report experiencing symptoms like tiredness, shortness of breath, dizziness, headaches, and even heart issues. It’s a phenomenon that can affect men and women of all ages, but certain populations, including pregnant women, are affected disproportionately. Without treatment, iron deficiency can easily slide into anemia, or a lack of healthy red blood cells. Iron deficiency is the most common cause of anemia—a lack of iron causes a lack of hemoglobin, which slows red blood cell production. Patient Blood Management Awareness Week is fast approaching. So fortunate to work with fabulous team with ONTraC for our provincial PBM program 👏🏻🇨🇦 For the general public, it is so important for you to know where your hemoglobin levels are to prevent unnecessary blood transfusions. 1/3 of the population is iron deficient which is the most correctable way to fix low hemoglobin levels. If you’re losing blood somewhere, don’t delay. Get it investigated and stopped asap. 🩸 🛑 👨🏽⚕️ 👩🏼⚕️ 🧑🏻⚕️ Physicians: Listen to your patients. Investigate and treat appropriately. Let’s save our blood supply for those who really need it 🫶🏻

Get your #greens for #ironhealth! Greens can help with iron deficiency primarily because they are a good source of non-heme iron, which is the form of iron found in plant-based foods. Here are some ways greens contribute to improving iron levels: 1. Iron Content: Leafy greens like spinach, kale, and Swiss chard contain iron, albeit in smaller amounts compared to animal sources. Including these greens in your diet can help increase your overall iron intake. 2. Vitamin C: Many greens are rich in vitamin C, which enhances the absorption of non-heme iron when consumed together. For example, pairing spinach (which contains iron) with citrus fruits or bell peppers can boost iron absorption. 3. Folate and Nutrients: Greens are also high in folate and other nutrients that support overall health, which can be beneficial when recovering from iron deficiency. 4. Dietary Fibre: While dietary fiber doesn’t directly impact iron levels, a diet rich in fiber can promote overall digestive health, which can improve nutrient absorption, including iron. 5. Low in Phytates: Some greens are low in phytates, compounds that can inhibit iron absorption. Choosing greens with lower phytate levels can help maximize iron intake. Incorporating a variety of greens into your diet can be an effective strategy to help combat iron deficiency, especially when combined with other vitamin C-rich foods to enhance absorption. #ironforhealth #irondeficiency #irondeficiencyanemia #lowiron #iron #ironhealth #checkyouriron #anemia #anemia #ironlevels #leafygreens #greens #greensforiron #vitaminc #ironabsorption
