If you are interested in AI, but worried about the risks to employment, there is a database worth looking at this Labour Day long weekend. The AI Risk Repository won’t alleviate your concerns, but it does provide an accessible overview of the whole the AI risk landscape, which can take your mind off the impact on jobs. More importantly, the database was made available by #MITFutureTech (https://lnkd.in/g5h_6qrR) to serve as a common frame of reference as society strives to address a wide range of potential threats, including rogue AI systems that develop the capacity to “cause mass harm through deception, weapons development and acquisition, persuasion and manipulation, political strategy, cyber-offense, AI development, situational awareness, and self-proliferation.” That, of course, is just one of hundreds of identified AI-related risks that have nothing to do with employment. Happy Labour Day weekend. https://airisk.mit.edu/ #AI #AIrisks #IBJrecommendations

Improving the practice of management is our mission.
About us
Ivey Business Journal is one of Canada’s oldest business publications. Launched as a management resource in 1933 by the Ivey Business School at Western University, it was previously published as the Quarterly Review of Commerce, Business Quarterly, and Ivey Business Quarterly. Our name and format have changed over the years, but our mandate remains the same: improving the practice of management. With an independent editorial team supported by Ivey Publishing and the Ivey Business School Foundation, IBJ operates as an online hub for management-related thought leadership. Driven by curiosity, we help organizational leaders explore how to best confront the challenges and disruptive forces that define today’s marketplace with an eye on seizing the unprecedented opportunities that they create.

Nobody knows how artificial intelligence will impact society or the economy. But when it comes to the workplace, management decisions, not the technology or its vendors, will decide if the impact of AI is positive or negative. Read about why in “Leadership Imperatives in an AI World,” a new IBJ feature essay by London Business School professor and incoming Ivey Business School at Western University Dean Julian Birkinshaw. https://lnkd.in/gTcJGyeq #Leadership #ArtificialIntelligence #IBJFeatures

When it comes to designing and delivering quality education related to Diversity, Equity and Inclusion (DEI), there are no one-size-fits-all solutions. But there are useful practises offered by a working group created by the late Columbia Business School Professor Katherine W. Phillips. Through the leadership of professors Modupe Akinola (Columbia Business School), Heather Caruso (UCLA Anderson School of Management), Erin Kelly (MIT Sloan School of Management), Zoe Kinias (Ivey Business School at Western University), and Michael Norton (Harvard Business School), this group disseminates its insights via professional development workshops. In a new IBJ Insight entitled “Developing DEI Teaching Practices,” Rachel P. Farrell highlights key takeaways from the workshop organized also by Ayana Younge, Christopher Petsko, and Tianna Barnes for the 2023 Academy of Management (AOM) conference. https://lnkd.in/gqShEfRr #DiversityEquityInclusion #DEI #EquityDiversityInclusion #DEI #IBJ

Corporate Strategy and Leadership Scholar | Professor at Ivey Business School | Former Commanding Officer in the Royal Canadian Navy | Canadian Who's Who 2022
My most valuable leadership lesson came from the least expected of places: the deck of a 75-foot patrol vessel. During my time as staff officer at HMCS Cabot, a Canadian naval reserve division in my home province of Newfoundland and Labrador, one of my duties was to command the Patrol Boat Standoff in the mid-1980s. Originally a Royal Canadian Mounted Police vessel, the Standoff was transferred to the Canadian Navy and tasked with coastal defense and law enforcement. On August 28, 1986, I took the helm with a crew of 10. Despite my prior experience as first mate under a very experienced officer-in-charge, nothing prepared me for the curveballs that command would throw my way. As we sailed out of St. John’s, the mission quickly unraveled, putting my leadership skills to the test. In this Ivey Business Journal article, I share my many stories of failure and reflect on failure and the power of perseverance and resilience with my co-author Ken Nason. https://lnkd.in/gG3quwqe #leadershiplessons #leadership #leadershipdevelopment #failure

You can argue that failing isn't an option. But that mindset ignores reality, not to mention a powerful driver of executive development. Amongst other things, failure can teach persistence and resilience, which are table stakes for effective leadership in the Age of Disruption. Read about the benefits of embracing failure in "Failure Is an Option," a new IBJ feature by Dr. Glenn Rowe and Ken A. Nason. https://lnkd.in/gnsjVSTD #EnbracingFailure #Resilience #Persistence #IBJFeature #Leadership

Meeting the press is easy. Cleaning up the mess when an interview goes sideways is something else. The trick, according to Thomas Mustac, Senior Publicist and Crisis Communications Expert with Otter Public Relations, is simply being prepared for when media opportunities turn into a publicity crisis.
