About us

On September 20th, 2019, JFE Shoji Trade Corporation acquired 100% of the shares of Cogent Power Inc, from Tata Steel Europe. Grouped together, the Cogent and JFE Shoji Steel America business make it possible for JFE Shoji to capture greater market share in the electrical steel market for both transformer and automotive products. The combination of Cogent and JFE Shoji has become one of the largest processors of electrical steel transformers in the world. JFE Shoji currently has many other production and processing facilities throughout Asia, as well as a facility in Tijuana, Mexico. Globally, JFE Shoji enhanced the business’ competitiveness by sharing and integrating the technical skill with deep business experience, which can be strongly applied to the global and North American markets. With this investment, JFE Shoji has one of the world’s leading processing and distribution functions for core design and manufacturing for transformers. Based in Tokyo, JFE is one the world’s largest steel producers with over 45,000 employees and operations globally.

  • Many revolutions start with a bang, but some revolutions start quietly. The development of amorphous metal cores sits squarely among the latter.  Take a moment to step back into the 1960s. Scientists have just observed the formation of a glassy phase in certain alloys during rapid solidification. This discovery has led to one of today's most groundbreaking materials in electronics: amorphous metal cores. Today, they're one of the key players in making our devices smaller, faster, and more reliable. The creation of amorphous metal cores is as fascinating as their function. Using a technique known as “melt spinning”, engineers produce thin strips of this metal by flinging molten alloy onto a swiftly rotating cylinder, where it solidifies almost instantly. This process disrupts the traditional crystal structure typical of metals, and instead creates a non-crystalline form. This unusual production process and distinctive microscopic structure isn’t even the most compelling feature of this technology; it's the performance. High magnetic permeability, low core loss, and the ability to handle high saturation flux density leads to dramatic reductions in energy loss when integrated into a power grid. For industries reliant on high-frequency #transformers, inductors, and other critical components, amorphous metal #cores allow them to operate at a far higher capacity while still saving on energy costs. Swipe to discover more of the unique advantages and applications of this revolutionary technology!

As our society’s demand for energy grows, so does our commitment to supporting clean energy and electrification through cutting-edge electrical steel solutions. In an exciting move last week, our strategic supplier and sister company, JFE Steel Corporation, in collaboration with JSW, has acquired thyssenkrupp Electrical Steel's (TKES) Indian grain-oriented electrical steel (GOES) production unit.   This acquisition strengthens JFE’s position as a leader in electrical steel, enhances its GOES production capabilities, and allows TKES to further strengthen and focus on its European investments. Together, our strategic mill partners, JFE Steel and TKES are laying the foundation for a future powered by cleaner, more efficient energy solutions! We’re proud of this milestone and excited for what’s to come! Learn more about the benefits this will bring to our valued partners and the markets we serve: https://lnkd.in/gFR-ciEF

Big conversations with big impacts last Friday at JFE Shoji! We were honoured to welcome Ministers Filomena Tassi and Karina Gould to our headquarters in Burlington to see exactly how we’re turning Federal Economic Development Agency for Southern Ontario | Agence fédérale de ...’s investment into action. Our CEO, Ron Harper, delivered an eye-opening presentation and spoke passionately about why building a stronger grid is urgent; how building local supply chains can strengthen our economic development and clean energy sources for the future; and why investing today means a better future for everyone. Walking the shop floor, they saw how our work and FedDev Ontario’s funding are already fueling real progress. But we’re just getting started! As long as there’s work to be done, we’ll keep pushing, keep building, and keep working toward a stronger, cleaner energy future for Canada. ⚡️ Thank you, Minister Tassi and Minister Gould, for your commitment to making real change in our industry! 💙

  • Quick question: How many devices do you have charging right now? 👀 Phones, laptops, maybe an EV? Now, imagine millions of people doing the same thing every day.  Our power grid is feeling the heat, and by 2040, it’s going to need a serious upgrade. 🥵🔌 That may sound like a long way off, but it’s a lot closer than you think! The good news is that we still have time to fix it if we act now - but the grid isn't going to fix itself! It’s time for us to get serious about upgrading our grid, and that means ALL of us, not just the experts.  You might be thinking, “But, what can I do?” Turns out, a lot! Even something as simple as sharing this video with others can help make a difference by spreading awareness. Change isn't going to happen just by crossing our fingers, though. The only way real change happens is when people start asking questions, making noise, and pushing for what’s right. The more we speak up, the more likely we are to see action!  Think it sounds impossible? Well, it won't be easy, that's for sure - but nothing changes if we just sit back and do nothing. It may sound tough, but so is living with an outdated power grid. 🕯️ It’s time to let our decision-makers know we’ve got something to say and we won't sit on the sidelines any longer. --- ✊ Actions you can take to support grid expansion: 💬 Start a conversation with your friends, family, and community about why grid expansion matters. Sometimes, real change begins over coffee. 🏫 Attend town halls or reach out to local representatives. Ask about their plans for sustainable energy and grid modernization. ✉️ Write letters or petitions. It might sound old school, but it’s effective! A well-written letter to your local newspaper or a petition to your government can bring attention to the issue and rally community support.  📱 Get active on social media! Join or follow energy advocacy groups on social media. Share informative posts, raise awareness, and encourage others to get involved. 💻 Educate yourself by watching documentaries, reading up on energy policies, and staying informed. The more you know, the more power you have!

  • What do turning on the lights, starting a car engine, running a power transformer, and swiping a credit card all have in common? They all rely on electromagnetic induction! This groundbreaking discovery, made in 1831 by Michael Faraday, gave us the ability to convert motion into energy - an innovation that powers countless technologies we use every day. But how does it actually work? And why should you care? Because understanding this process means appreciating the heart of our energy system! If you’ve ever been curious about how the lights come on or how your devices charge, watch our video for a simple explanation that reveals the power behind, well, the power. 🔌💡🌍  #electricity #siliconsteel #physics #transformers
