New Westminster’s new aquatics and community centre is named təməsew̓txʷ Aquatic and Community Centre, a hən̓q̓əmin̓əm̓ word for ‘sea otter house’, after the playful animal. This facility, designed by HCMA Architecture + Design, is one of Canada's pioneering zero-carbon aquatic centres. The new centre creates a combined 10,684 sq. m. state-of-the-art recreational facility. KMT provided the exposed cross-laminated timber (CLT) roof and wall panels with exposed Glulam beams. The need for a clear span across the 50 m lap pool dictated a long span steel truss solution. The north facing sawtooth roof allows for natural daylight and passive ventilation into the pool. The seamless CLT soffit was realized by hanging the CLT panels from the truss bottom chord, resulting in design that integrated structure, architecture, and sustainability. This vibrant facility will serve as the heart of the community for years to come. We’re excited to see the installation of our volumetric mass timber modules. We have a number of options from classroom/child care facilities to multifamily residential units. Each module is fully pre-fabricated off-site, resulting in rapid assembly on-site, empowering builders to streamline construction, resulting in faster project timelines and enhanced efficiency. #ModularConstruction #ModularMassTimber #CrossLaminatedTimber #CLT #Glulam #CLT #GreenBuildings #TimberIndustry

There was a lot to be learned touring our new #masstimbermodules with Danny Greenberg and Peter Boeckeler. This is a different style of #modularconstruction than I am used to and I was blown away by the shorter build cycles and smaller crew sizes. There were some incredible details that lead to very precise layouts and incredible quality. From laying out wall framing with CNC notches to prefabricated sub assemblies my mind was a buzz on how this approach can help propel the modular industry forward.

Kalesnikoff is excited to have supplied the mass timber for the Alliance Française’ stunning school in Vancouver. The four-storey 2,760 square metre mass timber and steel/mass timber hybrid is inviting and creates warmth throughout the building. The project team saved time by using prefabricated mass timber elements that arrived on site ready to be installed. The project came together to create a great learning environment for students and faculty to enjoy. The Marpole Community Center located in Vancouver’s Westside, has been designed in collaboration with Sky Spirit Studio Inc., a Coast Salish intergenerational design practice. The design honours the area’s Indigenous history, and the xʷməθkʷəy̓ əm (Musqueam) Nation and Host Nation artwork and concepts have been meaningfully incorporated into the design. The project vision is to create a sustainable new community centre for the Marpole neighbourhood that will be a place to welcome and connect all people for generations to come. Kalesnikoff provided the glue-laminated timber (glulam) columns and beams, a cross-laminated timber (CLT) floor system, and roof decking. A key feature is the curved roof combining steel beams and CLT deck. Construction is targeting a 40% reduction in embodied carbon using mass timber and will achieve LEED™ Gold certification.
