How does Katchi work? 🐟 It uses hydrodynamic blocks on the top and bottom of the net to ensure it stays open, replacing trawl doors and reducing fuel consumption and greenhouse gases. The vessel's depth sounder maps the seabed ahead of the net and communicates with the winches where they automatically adjust the cable payout. This moves the net up or down in the water column in accordance to the desired depth, specified by the fishers. This system also ensures that the net doesn’t come in contact with the seabed, avoiding obstacles and follows the contours of the seabed. Unmanned surface vehicles (USVs) scout for fish using hydroacoustics and deliver that info to the fishers to better plan their trips, reducing search time.
