The world's first doubly-curved timber-concrete spiral staircase, beautifully depicted in video form. At heart, we believe in craft - using our engineering and construction expertise to "master-build" something efficient and beautiful. The idea to free-span 70' with a timber-concrete composite helical stair came from our VP Lucas Epp, who wanted to mimic the old Boeing 747 spiral stair up to first class as a feature for the KF Aerospace museum StructureCraft designed and built. Using a special application of timber-concrete #composite, our team designed something special: a stair comprised of doubly curved #CLT with a concrete topping throughout the full #spiralstair. Addition of the concrete provides the required mass to control vibrations in the 70ft free span. Our in-house carpenters fabricated the two CLT halves at our headquarters and shipped them to site in Kelowna, BC for a smooth but complex install. 🥇 Game changing double-curved #CrossLaminatedTimber spiral staircase 🌲 Spanning 70 ft, a special #timber / #concrete composite was used 🎯 StructureCraft was in charge of Concept Design, Structural Engineering, Fabrication and Construction ➡️ Client: KF Aerospace | KF Centre for Excellence Museum ➡️ Architect: Meiklejohn Architects Inc ➡️ Location: Kelowna, BC, Canada 🌲 Using a special application of timber concrete composite (TCC), the structure is comprised of doubly curved #CLT with a concrete topping throughout the full spiral. Addition of the concrete provides the required mass to control vibrations in the 70ft long free span. Creating composite action between the concrete and the CLT significantly increases the overall stiffness of the stair, removing the requirement for any support columns and maintaining a highly aesthetic structure that serves as a welcoming showcase for the Centre. 🌲 Timber composite concrete (#TCC) is a unique hybrid structural system which is gaining more widespread adoption in longer span #MassTimber structures. Cross Laminated Timber (CLT) is commonly used as a planar element for floors or walls to carry out bending out-of-plane and shear-diaphragm forces in the plane of the element. 🌲 Bending lumber and gluing it together (#GLT) is an established method around one single axis, but bending in addition to twisting the CLT without cut-offs requires highly complex fabrication. 🌲 In addition to the added complexity of manufacturing, the stair spans an unsupported 70ft in a spiral fashion and is susceptible to dynamic excitation, a response due to footfall which tends to govern the design of stairs. The concrete topping was used to limit these dynamic effects and stiffen the overall cross-section through TCC-action, but also added significant further complexity to the design. 👉 Have you seen #glulam curves like this before? . . . .
