What's the latest on The Steel Insider? US steel's sharp rise in imports reverses course US steel imports dropped sharply in June after reaching their highest level in over two years in May. Weaker demand and lower US prices have been blamed for the June reversal. According to the US Census Bureau, steel imports reached 1.95 million tonnes in June, declining by almost 25% month-on-month and 23% year-on-year.  Steel imports from the top 10 largest exporting countries to the US market also fell in June. The top source of imports, Canada, saw its volume of exports to the US drop by 3% month-on-month to 506,000 tonnes in June. South Korea and the Netherlands reported the largest declines, falling by 43% (190,000 tonnes) and 46% (37,200 tonnes), respectively.  Want to read more? The Benefits of Stainless Steel in Pool Construction The choice of stainless steel type for pool and spa construction depends on the specific application and the level of resistance required against corrosion and other environmental factors encountered in pool settings. Commonly used grades of stainless steel in pool applications include 201, 304, 316, and 321. Among these, Type 316 is preferred for its superior resistance to staining, pitting, and crevice corrosion, ensuring optimal performance and longevity when properly maintained. Austenitic Stainless Steel:  Austenitic stainless steel, consisting of chromium, nickel, and sometimes molybdenum, is the predominant choice for pool applications. Its workability and exceptional corrosion resistance make it ideal for various components within pool environments. Fully Immersed Components:  Austenitic stainless steel is suitable for fully immersed components like pool ladders and railings. Its corrosion resistance ensures longevity even in continuous contact with pool water. Items Splashed with Pool Water:  Additionally, austenitic stainless steel is suitable for items splashed with pool water but not deemed safety-critical, such as changing room fittings.  Decorative Paneling and Fittings:  Austenitic stainless steel is also favored for decorative paneling within the pool hall atmosphere. Its corrosion resistance makes it a durable option for enhancing aesthetics while withstanding the humid environment of pool halls. Moreover, it is ideal for fittings in areas less influenced by pool hall conditions, such as cafe and entrance lobby fittings.   Type 316 Stainless Steel:  Type 316 stainless steel stands out for its heightened resistance to staining, pitting, and crevice corrosion. This enhanced resistance ensures the durability and longevity of pool components, even when subjected to aggressive pool environments. Duplex Stainless Steel:  While duplex stainless steel offers a desirable combination of strength and stress corrosion cracking (SCC) resistance, its susceptibility to pitting corrosion under aggressive conditions may limit its use in pools. USDOC Delivers Blow to Taiwanese Stainless Steel The US Department of Commerce (USDOC) has announced the preliminary results of the administrative review of the anti-dumping duties on stainless steel sheet and strip in coil originating in Taiwan. And the nickel price on the LME continues to be friendly and at almost 17,000 $/MT. According to the preliminary findings of the US Department of Commerce (USDOC) in the administrative review of the antidumping duty, Taiwanese stainless steel sheet and strip in coils were sold at less than normal value during the review period of July 1, 2022 through June 30, 2023. According to the USDOC, the average dumping margin is 21.1%. The provisional decision is not yet legally binding, but experience shows that no major changes are to be expected. Want to read more? Despite its misleading name, it doesn't contain any soap or cleansing agents. Instead, it's crafted from stainless steel, often resembling a traditional bar of soap. But here's the twist: while stainless steel soap presents a curious application of stainless steel, it's important to note that there is currently no scientific evidence supporting its effectiveness in removing odors. Here's the claim on how it works: The theory behind stainless steel soap is that the stainless steel molecules interact with and bind to the sulfur compounds responsible for causing odors, effectively neutralizing them.
