About us
The Law Practice Program (LPP) at the Toronto Metropolitan University (Formerly Ryerson University) is the first of its kind in Ontario. It’s an innovative alternative to traditional articling through a rigorous and demanding eight-month program combining on-line training and experiential learning with a hands-on work term. Ryerson works with the Law Society of Upper Canada and the legal community, including a strategic alliance with the Ontario Bar Association, to deliver a dynamic program that prepares Law School graduates to succeed in their legal practice and careers.

In the Law Practice Program’s inaugural year of 2014, Sheila Block—a veteran of Torys LPP and one of the country’s top trial lawyers—kick-started an annual tradition. Alongside her husband, Jim Seckinger, a law professor at the University of Notre Dame, she designed a nearly weeklong workshop on trial advocacy. Every year, LPP candidates first watch a series of video lectures, in which Block, Seckinger and other expert advisors reveal countless trade secrets: how to examine a witness, how to prepare for a cross-examination, how to write an opening statement. Lawyer-advisors then take the candidates through practical exercises based on the day’s material. Block herself is always weaving in and out of the sessions to offer insights and advice. “Most articling students do not receive this kind of intense, learning-by-doing instruction,” says Block. “The LPP candidates leave our training with the skillset needed to walk into any courthouse and make the judge think, These advocates know their way around the courtroom.” (Sponsored by the Law Practice Program)
