Researchers at Lawson and Western University have found a new brain imaging technique appears to be able to detect whether patients who are unresponsive following a severe brain injury can feel pain, hear their surroundings and retain conscious awareness. The team used functional near infrared spectroscopy (fNIRS), a portable brain imaging technique, to learn whether patients that appear to be in a coma in the ICU had preserved consciousness by recording brain activity at their bedside. In the first Canadian study of its kind, Dr. Cheryl Forchuk is working with partners across the country to study #homelessness among women who are #veterans. More than just a census, the study examines obstacles and solutions that may be unique to women veterans experiencing homelessness. The $1.2M grant from Housing, Infrastructure and Communities Canada | Logement, Infrastructures et Collectivités Canada will help ensure veterans have the support they need. Congratulations to our Dr. Richard Kim at London Health Sciences Centre (LHSC) for this support of his work to reduce the side effects of kinase inhibitors used to treat multiple types of cancer.
News release: OICR announces awards for eight research teams developing innovative ways to diagnose and treat cancer The winning teams are based across Ontario and are tackling some of the most common and hardest to treat cancers. They are developing solutions to find cancer earlier, diagnose it more accurately, and treat it more effectively with fewer side effects, with the ultimate goal of bringing these solutions to the healthcare system. https://lnkd.in/e2AHTpdY #cancerresearch #cdnhealth #cdnsci

Two world first discoveries from London Health Sciences Centre (LHSC) and Lawson Health Research Institute allow for accurate diagnosis of rare diseases and those that have been caused by environmental factors rather than genetics. In one of two newly published studies, Dr. Sadikovic found EpiSign™, a technology he developed, can be used to accurately identify patients affected by birth disorders called recurrent constellation of embryonic malformations (RCEMs). Since their discovery more than 70 years ago, it has been challenging to provide patients and families with accurate diagnoses. EpiSign can now be used to accurately identify RCEMs for the first time using a blood test. In a second study, Dr. Sadikovic’s team used EpiSign technology for the first time to develop an accurate biomarker for a group of disorders called fetal valproate syndrome, which is caused by prenatal exposure to toxic levels of medication and can result in neurodevelopmental disorders in infants. Some fascinating research is happening involving neuroimaging and brain injury.
#WesternU's Adrian Owen OBE PhD, Karnig Kazazian and collaborators from Lawson Health Research Institute and Harvard University have developed neuroimaging methods that can reveal the thoughts and intentions of brain-injured patients. Most importantly, this breakthrough can be used to predict survival rates of ICU patients. “We now know that we can accurately predict recovery from a serious brain injury if we use the right technique at the right time.” – Karnig Kazazian, research associate in the Owen Lab and first author of the Lancet Neurology paper

This partnership is also having a great impact on research!
St. Joseph’s and GE HealthCare spent the day discussing our GE national centre of excellence in molecular imaging and theranostics – a first in Canada. Recent advances and taking this exciting new field to the next level were among the forward-thinking conversations of the day. St. Joseph’s and GE share a common vision to improve patient outcomes in London and beyond through personalized precision diagnostics and targeted therapy for cancer and other diseases.
