The research being done at St. Joseph’s is innovative, yes, but it’s also life changing in ways you may not consider. In less than a week, research across the organization will be on display for you to see – like the MINDS 2.0 work giving youth and people up to 35 experiencing mental health and addiction challenges an outlet to tell their stories. Visit our research launch event with London Health Sciences Centre (LHSC) on October 16 to learn more about this research, and the other groundbreaking work taking place at St. Joseph’s: https://bit.ly/4cE03tG

New research is looking at how to improve outcomes for people who inject drugs and experience a serious, but treatable heart valve infection.
A landmark new study shows the heavy toll of endocarditis, a serious but treatable heart-valve infection, among people who inject drugs. Almost half won't survive after five years, and women are particularly vulnerable. Their odds vastly improve when they receive in-hospital addiction support and community care, with special attention to the needs of marginalized young women, says the study co-authored by London infectious diseases specialist Dr. Michael Silverman of St. Joseph’s. In London, more than 1,700 people are experiencing homelessness. At LHSC, we know that housing is health care and we are proud to be one of 70 organizations from across the city to collaborate on the development of the Health & Homelessness Whole of Community System Response. The Whole of Community Response is a strategic roadmap for supporting unhoused people who have the most complex health and social support challenges and helping them access permanent housing that meets their needs. How well is the roadmap working? A team of researchers has been tasked with finding out. Learn more: https://lnkd.in/dhkJ9dZQ City of London, Canada St. Joseph's Health Care London Western University

Researchers at Lawson and Western University have found a new brain imaging technique appears to be able to detect whether patients who are unresponsive following a severe brain injury can feel pain, hear their surroundings and retain conscious awareness. The team used functional near infrared spectroscopy (fNIRS), a portable brain imaging technique, to learn whether patients that appear to be in a coma in the ICU had preserved consciousness by recording brain activity at their bedside.
