There is a right way and a wrong way to get noticed by an Executive Headhunter.
As many executive recruiters and headhunters can confirm, we’re inundated with hundreds of resumes and messages daily. If you want to stand out and avoid getting lost in the pile, here’s how to make sure you’re noticed: Include a link to the role you are interested in. Really, it’s not optional. If you tell me you’re interested in the “procurement role we just posted” but leave me to figure out which one, you’re just adding extra steps. We are constantly retained on multiple searches, so let’s skip the guessing game. Now, a few more things to ensure your message doesn’t disappear into the void: Attach your resume. If I have to request it, we’re already off to a slow start. Keep it brief. One or two sentences that highlight your fit for the role. I don’t need a full career memoir. Personalize your outreach. One thing I do deliberately is add some notes to our job descriptions to ensure you’ve read them. If you don’t have that attention to detail, it’s tough for me to represent you to a client. Don’t be vague. “I’ve got 20 years of supply chain experience—anything for me?” Yeah, probably. But if you don’t tell me what you’re after, we’re not getting very far. And my number one tip is to stay networked with me. Too many times a candidate I help at the senior level lands a role and I never hear from them again (until they need a new role). I know people get busy, but executive search is a two way street. In short, keep it sharp, focused, and make it easy for me to see why you’re the right fit.
