A helpful resource for parents with teenagers, What's Wrong with My Teen? takes an in-depth look at the heavy subject matter of teenage addiction. Raphael, an addiction and mental health clinician, shares her personal story with alcohol and substance abuse as a teen and provides professional know-how on navigating challenging adolescent behaviors. "I define addiction as short-term pleasure, long-term pain, and the inability to stop or stay stopped," she explains. Dispelling common myths surrounding addiction and expounding on the struggles teens face with mental health in general, Raphael’s instructive debut will help parents broach conversations and implement actionable steps to build healthy, dynamic relationships with their kids. "My story is an example of the impact of trauma on mental and emotional well-being," Raphael writes. Attempting to cope with the loss of her mother at the tender age of 13, and later being diagnosed with Crohn's disease, Raphael found herself escaping her problems and pain with alcohol and drugs. From her own recollections, she counsels parents that it’s not just obvious, life-altering events that push teens into addiction; small, everyday stresses play a role as well. Raphael encourages parents to expend their energy on listening and understanding the “whys” behind their teen’s behavior, and to "refrain from blaming, shaming or judging.” To help parents get to the root of the problem, she provides case studies, scientific background on teen brain development, warning signs of abuse, and more. Interactive exercises scattered throughout Raphael’s guidance will help parents implement her advice, and she ends chapters with review summaries as well as journaling exercises for parents to organize their thoughts and emotions. From moments of crisis to everyday ups and downs, Raphael’s guidance covers all the necessary bases to help parents open healthy lines of communication, set clear boundaries, and create a safe space for teens as they navigate into adulthood. Takeaway: Step-by-step guide for parents of teens struggling with mental health and addiction.
“Oh my God. Oh my God. Oh my God. My own gramma doesn’t know my name!” Rayna Henessey is looking for a book of photographs to help her grandmother in the hospital remember what’s important. Instead of pictures, Rayna discovers journals her grandmother wrote in 1985, when she was fourteen—the same age Rayna is now. Rayna reads all night long ... and learns more about her family and herself than she ever imagined. Ami Hendrickson ✅ ‘s epistolary novel “Dear Alderone” spans generations, exploring those moments in life when—for good or for ill—everything changes in an instant. A love-letter to the written word and a testimony to the power of preserving personal history through journaling, “Dear Alderone” embraces the experiences that define our friendships, our families, and ourselves. — Available November 12th, 2024 everywhere books are sold.

"As a clinician I know how troubling it is to respond to the needs of a family with a teen experiencing mental health and substance use problems... Susan Raphael covers that territory using an easy-to-read style while still touching all the bases clinically. Susan teaches us that kids, like anyone, are trying to regulate their shifting emotions, often lacking the tools to do so. She shares her stories, trials and triumphs, tips and scripts and other resources that will help a troubled family navigate from the abyss towards maturation and contented recovery." - I. Michael Kaufmann, Author of Drugs, Lies & Docs, Recovery advocate. Founding Dir. Physician Health Program. Fellow: Amer. & Int. Societies of Addiction

Several weeks ago, Steve excitedly called out, "Hey, honey! Check your email! You have a date for a book signing at Barnes & Noble." You would think I’d have been over the moon, but instead, I was filled with self-doubt. My memoir tackles a tough topic, and I questioned, "Do they know what my book is about?" Steve reassured me that they did. I was local, a TEDx speaker, and had received a favorable Kirkus review. They were eager to host me at their Walnut Creek store. But the night before, I hardly slept. The idea of standing in front of strangers and sharing my story so publicly was overwhelming. In true Steve fashion, he had meticulously planned the day. We’d have lunch at Gott’s Roadside and then walk to the bookstore. But truthfully, I was too nervous to eat! When we arrived, the store manager warmly greeted us and walked us through the massive store—full of so many beautiful books—leading us to my table, nestled between the memoir and self-transformation sections. And so, we began. Within minutes, close friends started arriving, many having driven over an hour to get their books signed. I was in awe, feeling so deeply grateful. And then, “J” walked in. J had mentioned she was coming, and I’d been looking forward to meeting her in person. J is a survivor and someone I’ve connected with in our private group. When she walked in, I dropped everything. We shared a look and got emotional. Her husband had driven four hours to make this meeting happen. And this is what it’s all about. To everyone who has watched my TEDx talk, commented on it, or shared it—this is what happens. I find others. And to anyone who has purchased, read, or reviewed my book, this is how I will find more of my tribe, those who have spent decades thinking they’re the only ones, alone with their pain. We’re creating a community of support, and more stories are coming to light as more survivors go public. Thank you to every single person who has helped us raise awareness. I repeat myself—I can’t do this work without you. If you have purchased the book, thank you! If you have written a review, THANK YOU! You are helping others by doing so. *This is not "J" pictured.*

“Ernest Hemingway’s advice to writers was to “write the truest sentence you know.” Hemingway’s advice defines the work we do in support of our authors. Writing true words takes vulnerability and honesty, and Life to Paper recognizes the courage it takes for authors to express their uniqueness through sharing their story. Such stories have the power to change lives. What greater reward is there?” —Don Loney, Editorial Director
