Is the mining industry doing enough to address the global skills shortage it’s currently facing? The mining industry is facing a shortage of skilled professionals, especially in key areas such as automation, data science, and environmental management. According to Mining Digital and author Marcus Law, countries like Australia are feeling the pressure, with a vacancy rate of 5.2% and an estimated need for 24,000 new workers by 2026. This shortage is not confined to one region - globally, companies are struggling to attract and retain talent. With declining enrolments in mining engineering courses and an industry that may not align with younger generations’ work preferences, traditional solutions such as higher wages are losing their effectiveness. Addressing ESG concerns and creating career pathways that appeal to Gen Z and millennials may be part of the answer, but is it enough?
