Providing housing, health, and support services to adults with low or no income who have few, if any, options.
About us
Lookout Housing and Health Society is a charitable organization and social safety net that provides housing and a range of support services to people in Metro Vancouver communities. We help adults with low or no income who have few, if any, housing or support options. Because the people we serve have challenges meeting basic needs and goals, we place minimal barriers between them and our services. Since 1971, we have offered a range of services and housing 24/7 to adult men and women who are destitute and require assistance. There are an estimated 3,700 individuals homeless in Metro Vancouver. We believe that helping people help themselves is essential in addressing homelessness and all the issues that surround it. Securing appropriate housing is the first and most essential step in achieving responsible independence for individuals. We house more than 1,200 people every night in shelters and residences and operate within 34 buildings across the Lower Mainland. With 500 employees, we are among the province's largest non-profits and, unfortunately, continue to grow larger because of the increased demand for our services. We believe homelessness can be solved with everyone's help and the first step towards that goal is understanding homelessness. Learn more about the facts and issues by going to our website and following us on LinkedIn, Facebook and Twitter. *We reserve the right to remove or restrict any content posted by visitors.

NIMBY is used to describe opposition to new local housing developments but it’s different than having specific concerns that can be addressed with information or education. Learning about intended operations, the operator or previous success stories can often create comfort, allowing for support to become more accessible. Community impact, such as how this new site will create more traffic or less parking, is a common concern that can be addressed with information or education. Developments that pair the development with local infrastructure proactively reduce potential strain. Elements such as adequate parking and onsite outdoor spaces reduce community impact. Help get the conversation started by sharing your support to create a future where everyone has a place to call home. Come get your $5 "Yes, In My Backyard" button at the Lookout Admin office (M-F, 9-5pm).

NIMBY is used to describe opposition to new local housing developments but it’s different than having specific concerns that can be addressed with information or education. Learning about intended operations, the operator or previous success stories can often create comfort, allowing for support to become more accessible. Community safety is a common concern with new local housing developments yet studies show the addition of housing, including supportive housing, often leads to reduced police calls over time. Site design principles that enhance safety and security, such as through lighting, clear sightlines, and security access can also increase community safety. Swing by Lookout’s Admin office (M-F, 9-5pm; 544 Columbia St. New Westminster) and grab your $5 "Yes, In My Backyard" button! Every purchase helps create housing opportunities and strengthens our community. 🏠💙#YIMBY
