Fantastic news for the Bobby Orr Hall Of Fame, which was recently awarded the CASH (Canadian Association for Sport Heritage) Award of Excellence and the ISHY (International Sports Heritage Association) 2024 Award for New Exhibit. A native of Parry Sound, Ontario, Bobby Orr remains one of the greatest hockey players that Canada has ever produced. In 2022 the Town of Parry Sound and the staff and management initiated a process to re-vision and reinvigorate the Bobby Orr Hall of Fame. The Town contracted Lord Cultural Resources as part of a team led by kubik maltbie in association with WeatherstonBruer Associates to conduct the work beginning in March 2022. Our work included interpretive planning to develop the main themes, communication messages, key stories, and potential means of expression for each exhibit. We also engaged in stakeholder consultation and content development for the exhibition. The new exhibits highlight Parry Sound’s unique environment and strong community values that have produced people who have achieved excellence in sport and community-building as exemplified by Bobby Orr and the other members of the Bobby Orr Hall of Fame.

Today is the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation and Orange Shirt Day in Canada. It is an opportunity to reflect on the painful history and ongoing impacts of colonialism on Indigenous communities. On Orange Shirt Day, we remember the violence and tragedies committed at residential schools for Indigenous children. We honour the children who never returned home, survivors, their families and their communities. Go to Orange Shirt Society for ways to learn, advocate, participate and give. You can explore their Reconciliation Hub, offering a selection of educational resources. Visit The National Centre for Truth National Centre for Truth and Reconciliation website (nctr.ca) for year-round resources. Explore the Woodland Cultural Centre’s full day of programming, including a screening of the film Silent No More, Survivor Talk and Q&A and Truth and Reconciliation Commission (TRC) activities including virtual tours of the former Mohawk Institute Residential School. “At the heart of Truth and Reconciliation is the deep acceptance by settlers of the contributions of Indigenous peoples to our quality of life and history.” — Gail Lord, co-founder of Lord Cultural Resources. The Niagara Parks Commission, in association with Plenty Canada, recently announced the publication of Landscape of Nations: Beyond the Mist, featuring works from 17 authors, numerous photographers, mapmakers and artists, that chronicles the history of Indigenous peoples who have lived within the Niagara region for some 13,000 years. Landscape of Nations: Beyond the Mist was co-edited by Rick Hill, a renowned educator of Indigenous cultures, histories and arts who currently serves as an Indigenous Innovations Specialist at Mohawk College and Tim Johnson, Senior Advisor for Heritage and Legacy with the Niagara Parks Commission and Plenty Canada, Indigenous Advisor to Lord Cultural Resources and Executive Producer of the multiple award-winning documentary, RUMBLE: The Indians Who Rocked the World. “I couldn’t be more gratified by the depth of content that the book’s scholars, Indigenous knowledge holders, and artists contributed to its pages,” said Johnson. “This magnificent book does something truly remarkable, it greatly expands understanding and comprehension of the deep Indigenous history along the Niagara River corridor while simultaneously revealing the place-based learning power inherent at heritage destinations throughout the Niagara Parks system, extending 56 kilometres from Lake Erie to Lake Ontario.” Landscape of Nations: Beyond the Mist is available for purchase across Niagara Parks retail stores and other participating locations across the region such as the Niagara Falls History Museum, Niagara-on-the-Lake Museum, and Parks Canada's Fort George. Exciting news about the new Crow Museum of Asian Art.
We are pleased to share that Phase I of the Edith and Peter O’Donnell Jr. Athenaeum at The University of Texas at Dallas opens to the public today, September 25th. The building serves as a new home for the Crow Museum of Asian Art collection and also features selections from the Dallas Museum of Art (DMA), contributions from UT Dallas’ founding families, objects from the University’s growing collection of Latin American art, and works by Dallas photographer Carolyn Brown. This 57,000-square-foot building includes 12 galleries, a conservation studio, the Rick Brettell Reading Room, and seminar spaces for lectures and workshops. Greeting visitors at the entry, the first pieces in the Athenaeum's outdoor sculpture garden are also now in place, including The Sweepers by Wang Shugang. Some key details: by lifting galleries up to the second floor, we’ve created outdoor areas at ground-level that are sheltered from the sun and elements by the deep overhang above, making space for events, studying, socializing, and performances year-round. The building’s facade features a textured relief of white precast concrete that acts as a canvas for the ever-changing light of the Texas skies. Senior Consultant Elisa Bailey shares a recap of the InclusiveMuseum conference in Vienna. Her session drew from case studies and Lord’s latest research to explore how museum management can facilitate the dynamic change that is happening within institutions.
Senior Consultant, Lord Cultural Resources | Independent Curator & Founding Director, CuraCultura & Rise.Rosa.Rage Socio-Political Graphics Archive
A very enjoyable edition of the InclusiveMuseum conference in the MQ – MuseumsQuartier Wien Vienna this past weekend (in spite of the storms!). It was very special to participate in a conference, research and publishing network that elevates the work of younger people. I made some wonderful new friends from across Europe and, as ever, loved being back in one of my favourite cities, where I lived briefly over ten years ago now. Thank you Professor Amareswar Galla, PhD and the Common Ground Research Networks team for putting this together, where I shared new scholarship and thinking from Lord Cultural Resources alongside my own, on Museums and their roles and responsibilities for both leading and responding to the dynamic changes of our times, setting care and values, decolonisation, social and climate justice at the heart of this. #museums #conference #museumsconference #inclusivity #inclusivemuseums #socialjustice #climatechange #dynamicchange #changemaking #culture #maketheworldabetterplace #curatingiscaring #careinmuseums #decolonisation
