Introducing Steve Goulding, the latest member of the M3 Project Solutions team! Steve Goulding grew up in Gander, and earned his B. Comm degree from Memorial University of Newfoundland in 1993. Despite the challenging economic environment of the time, Steve was able to obtain employment with a locally owned business where he was involved with developing business and strategic plans, feasibility studies, and financial analyses. Over time, his real strength shone through – developing models using MS Excel, including cash flow, economic impact, and labour capacity models. Steve developed hundreds of models for projects of all sizes during this period. A key career moment came in 2008 when he leveraged his data modeling proficiency and started working on the Muskrat Falls project. During this time, Steve became involved with many aspects of the project and developed a thorough understanding of the complexities of large projects and the importance of collecting and analyzing meaningful data. Steve’s approach to data modeling emphasizes functionality and data integrity over aesthetics. His philosophy is this: no amount of spreadsheet formatting will compensate for bad data. His ability to identify trends, patterns and inconsistencies in data is exceptional. In his spare time, Steve loves to bake, adding a “sweet” touch to his undeniable data-driven expertise. Meet Mike Thornhill, P.Eng Mike grew up in the town of Grand Bank, Newfoundland on the Burin Peninsula, 360 km from the province's capital of St. John's. He later moved there to attend Memorial University of Newfoundland, graduating from the mechanical engineering program in 2009. He has worked with M3 Project Solutions since 2022 as a Senior Implementation Engineer. Mike says, “Clients often request help with training and process creation to effectively use their various systems and tools, which we support with our expertise. At M3 Project Solutions, we have over a hundred years of collective experience in project controls and project management.” Mike sums up the philosophy at M3 Project Solutions by saying, “We're trying to solve a common problem for our clients.” He goes on to add, “We aim to implement best-in-class procedures, processes, and systems to standardize and improve the efficiency of projects. The goal is to establish approved methods that lead to more successful and efficient project outcomes. We focus on updating technology to current standards, particularly in data-driven processes, with plans to prepare clients for future AI integration. Good data is essential for accurate cost and schedule forecasting, which is a priority before leveraging AI.” But for him, the success of a project hinges on having an “engaged and passionate team”, as their understanding and adaptability make navigating changes and challenges much smoother. The key to getting the best out of people lies in “good leadership”, says Mike. “A project manager's well-informed plan inspires confidence and makes execution straightforward, but if the plan is created without consulting the team, it can lead to a loss of confidence.” But the key word here is “team.” Mike says, “One person can't do everything.” “At M3 Project Solutions, we can't wait to see what the future holds.
