What’s being done to address the lack of Northern voices in journalism? Kaila Jefferd-Moore, Project Director of the Northern Journalism Training Initiative—a project on MakeWay’s #SharedPlatform—shares how NJTI is bridging this gap by providing Northerners with media training and mentorship to strengthen their storytelling skills. In the photo below, K’a Nakehk’o is seen filming b-roll footage using his phone and a tripod during a trip up the Mackenzie River. K’a created a video about his journey using skills that he gained during NJTI’s community journalism training last spring. Participants in the program learn valuable skills such as photo essay creation, scriptwriting, and video broadcasting—all in a hands-on and place-based context, grounded in local norms and values. In 2020, in an interview with Chatelaine Magazine, Ingrid Waldron, Ph.D. said, “Before I leave this world, I want to make a contribution that is tangible.” Fast forward, and on June 20, 2024—a decade after she began advocating for environmental justice in Canada—Dr. Waldron celebrated a major milestone: #BillC226, which requires Canada to assess, prevent, and address environmental racism and advance environmental justice, officially became law. “There were times where, I didn't feel like giving up, but I felt that the bill was not going to pass in my lifetime,” Dr. Waldron recalls.
