This month, our team at the Maple Leaf Centre for Food Security hosted the fifth annual Food Security Symposium! It was an excellent day of insights and knowledge sharing which truly reinforced the urgency to work across sectors and implement solutions to reduce food insecurity in Canada. It’s a devastating but true reality that in Canada, almost 9 million people experienced food insecurity in 2023. This is a growing crisis that will take a collective effort for change. Ready for a slice of history?🍕 In 1977, a man named Franco Reda was in search of pepperonis for his pizzas, but without any success. He decided to open his own company, at the time named Viau, by converting his home into a fully operational industry specialized in dry pepperonis! Today, that deli meat company is under our family of brands and is located in Laval, Quebec. Our Laval plant opened in 2006 and produces a variety of delicious pizza toppings and deli meats. This World Food Day, we are taking the time to reflect on and raise awareness of an ever-growing issue: food insecurity continues to rise in Canada and more than 1 in 4 children is food insecure. We know that kids will be kids, and being a picky eater is just a part of growing up We know this because parents told us! Some kids want peanut butter on pickles. Others will only eat dinosaur-shaped food. And some believe that strawberry yogurt can’t have strawberries in it. But for those 1 in 4 children — parents are grappling with the difficult reality that they are just struggling to put food on the table. As we continue to celebrate Women’s History Month at Maple Leaf Foods, we’re proud to provide support and conversations to help empower the many wonderful women in our workplace. Did you know October is also Breast Cancer Awareness Month and World Menopause Month? This month, we were thrilled to invite Cara Rosenbloom RD, a volunteer with the Breast Cancer Support Fund, in partnership with AccessAbility Network, to speak at one of our employee resource groups (ERG) events. Cara chatted about breast cancer awareness and educated our team with actionable knowledge about topics ranging from screening guidelines to nutrition and activity recommendations. Later this month, we’re excited to host Teresa Isabel Dias BSc Pharm RPh NCMP, in partnership with our Women’s Impact Network (WIN) and Mental Health Advocacy Network resource groups. Teresa will discuss perimenopause and menopause, educating Team Members about how to support themselves or others, whether at home or in the workplace.
