9 days. That's how long the Earth vibrated during a rockslide-generated massive tsunami in Greenland, according to new research. 🌎 The seismic event was detected around the world, but was was so unprecedented that researchers initially had no idea what had caused it. After solving the mystery, scientists say it shows how climate change is already impacting the planet, and major landslides could happen in places once thought to be safe as temperatures continue to rise. 🌊 Rogue waves, like the most extreme ever recorded measured by MarineLabs in 2020, seem to come out of nowhere and pose serious risks for ships at sea. Now, according to a study in the journal Scientific Reports, researchers have developed an algorithm that can use measurements from buoys to correctly predict 73% of abnormally large waves five minutes before they happen. At MarineLabs, we're excited to see how this groundbreaking research aligns with what we're doing to protect coastlines and revolutionize maritime safety. Our top takeaways: ⚓ Enhancing Maritime Safety: The paper shows how neural networks can predict rogue waves using buoy data. It highlights the power of machine learning to make real-time ocean conditions safer. 🌍 Scalability Across Locations: The neural network’s ability to predict rogue waves in new locations resonates with our approach at MarineLabs. We’re focused on providing reliable, scalable insights across various coastal regions, even in areas with less data. 📊 Real-World Impact: By combining machine learning with real-time data, tools like this offer advanced warnings that can prevent dangerous incidents at sea. MarineLabs recently had the chance to go out on a pilot transfer boat to see BC Coast Pilots in action and using CoastAware for forecast and real-time weather data. In all weather conditions along the rugged coastline, the Pacific Pilotage Authority and BC Coast Pilots bring their local knowledge and expertise to ensure ships, crew, passengers, and cargo arrive safely at port. Real-time access to accurate, hyper-local weather data allows vessel pilots to make informed decisions, ensuring optimal timing, safe boarding, and smooth navigation of vessels in changing maritime conditions. Thanks to the Pacific Pilotage Authority - Administration de pilotage du Pacifique and BC Coast Pilots Ltd. (including Capt. Mike Young) for the opportunity!

To the maritime industry and the operators responsible for over 90% of global trade, today's for you. This year’s #WorldMaritimeDay theme, “Navigating the Future: Safety First,” highlights how crucial safety is for ports, ships, vessel pilots, and all those who keep the industry moving. 🚢 With ships getting larger, ports staying the same size, and volatile weather from climate change, maritime operations face increasing risks. That's why we believe every float in the ocean should be a real-time data station. Harnessing our expanding North American-wide sensor network, we deliver data-driven coastal intelligence that helps subscribers enhance safety, optimize operations, and build climate-resilient coastlines. Access to weather data, forecasting, and insights means users can make smarter, safer maritime decisions—making for smoother sailing even in stormy seas. 🌊

Ocean temperature extremes, known as marine heatwaves, are becoming more frequent and intense. To better predict the intensity and duration of these events, a team of researchers at the NOAA: National Oceanic & Atmospheric Administration Physical Sciences Laboratory built a marine heatwave forecasting tool that can predict ocean surface temperatures as far as a year in advance. 🌡️ Check it out here: https://lnkd.in/gcY8vDSF For this and other cool stuff subscribe to our newsletter, The Rogue (see the link below in the comments).

Forecast AI: 50% More Accurate Than Trusted Models Find out more ⬇️ In a detailed study made possible by collaboration with Port Halifax and assessment of 32 sensor nodes with 84 buoy-years of metocean data, MarineLabs Forecast AI outperforms common forecast model products in industry standard verification tests and retroactively reviewed operational tests. Forecast AI generates a 50% reduction in average error than publicly available maritime forecasting models and a 34% reduction in average error than a paid high-resolution model. Root Mean Square Error (RMSE) is a common numerical weather prediction model verification test for average error. RMSE was assessed for wind speed, wind direction, significant wave height, wave peak period, and wave direction at 32 locations covering 1.0 to 4.5 years of data per location. Across the complete data set, hyper-localized AI metocean forecasting had an average error of 69% less for wave peak period, 85% less for significant wave height, 52% less for wave direction, 14% less for wind direction, and 33% less for wind speed than other publicly available forecasting models [figure 1 below].
