Nicknamed "The Riverton Rifle", Reggie Leach, a proud member of Berens River First Nation, was one of the greatest hockey players who ever came out of Manitoba. Selected by the Boston Bruins third overall in the 1970 National Hockey League draft, Leach played for 14 seasons in the National Hockey League (NHL) for four different teams. In 1975, Reggie led the Philadelphia Flyers to the Stanley Cup by scoring an unprecedented 19 goals in 16 games. Reggie was named the winner of the Conn Smythe Trophy as the most valuable player of the NHL playoffs. He has since been inducted into The Manitoba Hockey Hall of Fame and Museum, the Manitoba Sports Hall of Fame, the Philadelphia Flyers Hall of Fame, and received the Order of Manitoba and the Order of Canada. He also has an honorary Doctor of Laws degree from Brock University. In 2022, we had the honor of inducting Reggie Leach as a part of the inaugural Class of Inductees into the Manitoba Indigenous Sports Hall of Fame. Do you know an extraordinary Indigenous athlete, coach, or community leader whose impact on sports in our province matches that of Reggie Leach? It's time to shine a spotlight on their achievements. Nominate them today and ensure they receive the acknowledgment they truly deserve. Act now, as nominations for this year's Class of Inductees close on February 28th, 2024, at 4:00 PM CST.
