During Construction Inclusion Week, we celebrate our McNally employees for who they are as individuals and know that our organization is stronger when we use our diverse backgrounds to work together toward a common goal. We also recognize the importance of ensuring that our organization is one that is built on mutual respect. We caught-up with Erica McGlynn, Project Engineer for McNally Tunneling, to get some of her insights as a woman in the tunneling industry. How long have you been in the tunneling industry? “My career began in 2012 as an engineer on the Euclid Creek Tunnel project in Cleveland.” What changes have you seen for women in the tunneling industry since you started your career? “The biggest change I’ve seen is the number of women entering this industry and working in field-based roles. When I first started, I didn’t see many other female engineers or craft employees. That’s been slowly changing and it’s so refreshing to see more women in these positions.” What advice would you give to women just starting their careers in the tunneling or construction industry? “Be an excellent communicator and team player. Listen to the ideas and recommendations that others have and take them into consideration. And don’t be shy or afraid to speak up and get your point across.” What recommendations do you have for the inclusion of women in the tunneling or construction industry? “Make women feel welcome and invite them to join in any activities that take place outside of work. Ask them questions and listen to their ideas and what they have to say. Also, shed any old-school beliefs or biases about women working in male-dominated industries.” #ConstructionInclusionWeek

ICYMI: Over the next several months, the tunnel boring machine will be disassembled, refurbished and reassembled for its next journey underground for the Southerly Tunnel and Consolidation Project.

7.14.2022 ➡️ 6.13.2024 After nearly two years underground, the cutterhead from the Shoreline Storage Tunnel began its 100-foot journey up to ground-level yesterday afternoon. Since late 2022, this cutterhead has excavated more than 3 miles of soft-ground in our first soft-ground tunnel project, marking another milestone in our efforts to reduce 4.5 billion gallons of combined sewer overflows under Project Clean Lake. 700 days underground has this cutterhead looking a bit different. Luckily, it gets a well-deserved break before heading to its next project, our Southerly Storage Tunnel.

Congratulations to the McNally/Kiewit team on the recent Shoreline Storage Tunnel Project milestone in Cleveland, Ohio. After more than 14,000 feet of boring, the Tunnel Boring Machine [TBM], named Avery, completed her journey and reached the retrieval shaft on May 30, 2024. The Shoreline Storage Tunnel is the first large-diameter, soft-ground tunnel completed for the Northeast Ohio Regional Sewer District. Check out the photos of this milestone, which features “Avery," the 26-foot diameter, 385-foot-long earth pressure balance tunnel boring machine used on this project.

After 10 weeks of hard work and dedication, we’ve reached completion of the first concrete caisson of the Bedford Institute of Oceanography (BIO) Cribwork Wharf Replacement. Our team fabricated 350 square meters of slip-forms, placed 700 cubic meters of concrete and worked approximately 10,000 hours to stay on schedule, all with no recordable incidents. The focus of this project is to replace an existing Canada Coast Guard Wharf and strengthen the site’s infrastructure to help keep our oceans safe and clean. Congratulations to everyone on this project milestone!
